Decided to write this one in first person for no particular reason. Just like to change it up sometimes.

Your pov

I groaned the moment I heard of my assignment from the professor. She had decided at the end of the month, every student would be graded on their weapon experience through a practice fight against experienced knights. For most students, that would sound like an excellent experience, but not me. I hate training, thus I can normally be caught slacking off on it. That said, I already knew I'd be failing this test no matter how hard I work. Why bother preparing for it then? I wasn't going to. I'd accept defeat before it came.

When classes for the day finally ended, I couldn't even stand up before one of my classmates reached my desk, glaring down at me with crossed arms.

I looked up into her pretty blue eyes. Based on her expression, I could already guess what she wanted to say, and sighed. "Hello, Ingrid...."

Ingrid was one of the people I thought I could be good friends with at the start of the year. She was nice enough when we met, but from there I slowly realized she was kinda pushy and judgmental. It became more obvious when I started losing interest in working with a lance. She got on my case all the time for skipping out on training and not putting in my best effort.

"(y/n)." She already sounded disappointed. "I hope you're going to spend the month training for the test?"

"No." I waved it off nonchalantly. "Actually, I was thinking of conveniently getting sick on that day."

She shook her head with a sigh. "(y/n), you're not going to graduate at this rate. I thought you wanted to be a knight."

"I did before I realized how much training blows," I explained. "I just want to already be good at it."

"You're never going to be good at it unless you train." She pulled me up by the arm. "Come on; I'm going to help you."

I groaned dramatically again to express my displeasure, but didn't try to fight her. If she wanted me to do something, it would end up happening.

Ingrid dragged me to the training grounds, where she grabbed two fake lances, thrusting one into my hands. I waited as she moved a bit further away.

"Okay (y/n), come at me!" she finally ordered once she'd prepared herself. "Don't hold anything back. Show me what you can do!"

I huffed in annoyance, repositioning my lance. The sooner I get this over with, the sooner I can relax. That was my only motivator.

I jogged up to her, readying my lance, and lashing out with a half-assed swing. She moved back quickly, parrying my poor attack with a swift blow to my side.

I scrambled back out of her range. I guarded myself this time, hoping if she made the first move, maybe it'd be easier on me.

She didn't advance. Instead, she lowered her lance, shaking her head as I did the same.

"(y/n), are you even trying?"

"No, not really."

She pinched the bridge of her nose. "You can't get away with this forever. You're already falling behind everyone else. If you keep doing poorly on the battlefield and failing your exams, you're going to be expelled."

"Yeah yeah...." I kicked the dirt, watching it puff into the air. "I don't want to get expelled, I just...don't like all the physical work."

"You can't be a knight with that kind of attitude!" Her tone sounded snappy, but also encouraging, in a way. Like she was motivated towards a new task. "I hope you don't have any plans this month, because I'm going to make sure you pass the test. From now on, we'll train every evening until we're too tired to continue."
