My grandfather and the King of France were true to their words. Two weeks after the banquet, I was summoned to immediately come to Versailles.

The king is getting worse, everyday...

And the sicker he is, the tighter the royal leash around my neck becomes.

The formality of the position I had painfully accepted took place in a close door meeting with the French king's selected royal councils. It was too exclusive that I had no one but myself as they discussed every bit of detail of the life I'm about to get into. My grandfather only listened, out of my sight...

Even my mother wasn't allowed inside the room as her presence  might influence my decision.

She knew about this possibility. I suppose like me and as my mother, she never wanted this life for me as well. The main reason why she rebelled against her parents in the first place is due to evade the suffocating life of a privileged yet prisoned monarch.

"His majesty only wishes no one but you to replace him. An elective monarchy was suggested but as you know, the royal family of France would rather resort to hereditary. The Wintour Di Mercier family is the closest kin to the King with a potential heir to the throne. You may not be aware of this but you were appointed a long time ago. A written testament is already issued that you will be his successor and if not granted, the throne will falter. France is an absolute monarchy turned semi constitutional. If the throne stays vacant for a long time, a new form of government shall take place and that will be the end of your family's reign."
