"You know?"
"Unhnm?" Adeelah raised her brow.
"I know you're still mad at me because you're yet to be who you're around me. When I brought those papers, I remember stopping to talk to you. I just wanted to see your reaction so i can have some hope before leaving. That time alot of things needed my attention. Due to my absence, one of my companies was going down. I really had to go and i thought even though there was no Iddah on you, i thought it will take time before you tie the knot with Ameer. I have been waiting for your call. Although I believe i wronged you in this part, you've to understand I'm just human, if i was able to provide solutions for problems which I foresighted, it's normal to forget about other parts. I am really sorry that i made you feel alone. I'm sorry for everything that made you upset with me Adeelah."
Silence enveloped them before she looked at him.
"Why did you choose to be my chauffeur?"
ElMustapha smiled, the Salisu in him waving before his eyes. He literally muttered a good job to himself before answering her question.
"Ever since we met at Saudi, I can't stop thinking of that small girl who was my source of inspiration. You have no idea that you inspired me to do alot of things. The little questions you asked me then, opened my brain to ask even more questions about my life. That's when i began asking and persisting to know the truth. That's when i knew the truth about my existence. The truth about who Baba and Baffa were. Years after, it started becoming more obvious to the point that I couldn't contain it. I wanted to escape the harsh reality of knowing that. I remember going to see Maami and telling her that i would go for a two year course. I remember telling my friend whom we schooled together-your aunt's husband that i would travel for a while. I even met you in his house. Do you remember?"
"I do remember."
"That's the first time i saw you as an adult. And the moment i looked at the recording, it just clicked that it was you. I looked away because that buried feeling was surfacing. At that time I wasn't sure of where to go so i just decided to be your chauffeur. Since i have that Salisu face, it became easier. But i wanted to alter my body size so i lost some weight. I chose to be your chauffeur because i wanted to be close to you. I wanted to study you first which if not that way, there's no other way. You're not the welcoming type. I wanted to see how you act, how you dress, how you interact with people, how you think, everything Adeelah..." ElMustapha stopped to catch a breath and Adeelah used that opportunity to talk.
"I think that was too invading."
"I'm sorry if you're offended. That's the only way this local man knew. I also knew all the ladies around me love me because of either my looks or my wealth. I wanted true love. So i knew if you fall in love with Salisu, there's no way you won't fall in love with Adeel. It's all me afterall. Even if Salisu was an act, it's all from me. I didn't go under training. There were alot of times where i made a blunder but you hardly notice. So, you see like i said no one is perfect. No one can be, not even someone as local as ElMustapha. You inspired me to go back to islamic school because at that time all i knew was the basics. You loved me in a way that no one has ever shown me love. You took me despite all the flaws, you didn't care what people may say..." he stopped again. If there's anything being Salisu had taught him was being talkative because that's the only way to be with Adeelah.
Adeelah glared at him. "I don't love you."
ElMustapha smiled. Smiling had become a habit for him. Even though it's said that people hardly change, he would like to oppose that because he had changed. In myriad ways.
