"Couldn't have been my uncle as I'm sure she killed him. She attacked us!" I shouted while pacing up and down the room. Damon and Stefan sat on the couch, thinking things over. "Who the hell could have killed her?"
"But who else was about? Who else knew her?" Stefan said before lying back.
I looked over to Damon and he looked back. We both had that knowing look on our faces. "Zach!" we shouted together.
I ran upstairs and Damon ran to another room. I threw open my door and grabbed the journals I had yet to read. I flicked through every page but couldn't find anything that placed Christie and Zach together.
"Found something!" Damons voice came up the stairs. I ran down to him in the library and saw him with journals all over the place and a few drawers pulled out of the desk. Stefan had joined in with the search, he was holding a journal open to a certain page.
"Sheriff called today. I didn't know what I was suppose to do. I had to bury her in the garden, people would have asked more questions than they should." Stefan read out loud, "Seems like he killed her."
Damon passed me over a photograph, "It's Zach and Christie. It was on this page when we opened it up. But that't the last time he wrote."
I looked at the crinkled photo of the two of them. She was pretty; long brown hair and a bright smile. Her arms were around Zachs neck, and his arms were round her waist. He had a beaming smile too. They looked so happy.
"So he buried her. But it doesn't say he killed her." I snapped back to reality, to the brothers.
"Well then, let's go talk to the Sheriff" Damon smiled and walked out the room.
"Oh, now? Ok" I mumbled and followed him out.
"Sheriff Forbes! How lovely to see you again" Damon smirked as we walked into her office
"What do you guys want? I'm in the middle of -"
"What can you tell me about my uncles murder?" I snapped out, just wanting answers now. I had been played about too much to get fobbed off.
Sheriff Forbes closed the folder on her desk and looked up at the three of us, "please take a seat." She motioned to the chairs and I sat down. The boys stayed standing.
She sighed before getting up of her own chair and over to a filing cabinet, "we always had an inkling but nothing was ever confirmed." She opened a drawer, went through a few files and then picked one out, "until his death." She came back over and placed the folder in front of me on her desk, "this is everything. Notes, interviews and crime scene photos."
I took it, my hand shaking as I opened up the pages.
"We got a 9-1-1 from his home phone line and all we could hear was sobbing. Two officers went round and found this." She leaned over and pointed to a photo on the page. It was dark but I could make out a foot at the bottom of the stairs just by the front door. And blood down the stairs as if he had slid down them. "His body was found there. And also near the kitchen." She sighed as I found the next photograph. His upper torso was in shot, laying next to the kitchen door and you could see his legs by the stairs. These two rooms were either side of the family room. He was split in two. An animal attack? They really managed to pull that one on this!?!
"And Christie was found against the wall, rolled into a ball and sobbing. The phone was next to her." Sheriff Forbes sighed again as I flicked through the pages and read bits to myself. "She was arrested as she was covered in blood. With everyone we arrested back then, we gave them some water to calm down laced with vervain. That's how we knew she was a vampire."
I looked up to Damon and Stefan, tears stinging my eyes as reality hit. "One of my officers shot her and then ran a stake through her heart. I called up Zach as I had seen them together a couple of times." She carried on telling the story but all I could think about is what if it was Damon or Stefan? What if one of those had been caught and killed? My stomach fell and I felt sick. I couldn't imagine my life without them now. I couldn't imagine what they must be going through daily; the fear that someone will find out and kill them...
"What happened then? Why did he decide to bury her in the yard?" Stefan asked, breaking eye contact with me but leaving a hand on my shoulder, just like Damon.
"He said he felt responsible for her. That it was his mistake and that he should deal with her. He told me after that he buried her in the yard. And now I make sure no one goes to that yard and never finds her." She sighed and fell back into her chair. "We put it as an animal attack as we had a few the weeks leading up to that attack. Well, some seemed like animals anyway."
I looked over to Damon who was now looking at the floor, "it was you." I sighed, "you were the animal attacks. Maybe Christie too but, mainly you. Wasn't it?" I asked him. All
Damon would do was nod."After she died, there were no more attacks for about three or four weeks. Then we had four more people attacked. And it stopped again." Sheriff Forbes explained but I didn't take my gaze off Damon
"Yeah, those were me. I had left for a few weeks and came back. I realised she wasn't here any more so I left too." Damon sighed as he finally sat in the other chair next chair, "I just thought she left. Zach never told me anything."
So much information in such a short amount of time.... I had no idea what to do with it all. My eyes filled up with tears again and I just let them fall. I burst into a crying fit, unsure how to feel or what to do.
