Chapter 9- Bread

It was the next morning and Xue Yang had stayed up, Wei Ying was still scared that the dog would hurt him if Xue Yang was asleep.
Xue Yang heard a knock on the door, "Young Master Wei," a soft voice said, "a-are you there?"
"Wei Wuxian is asleep," Xue Yang said scooting closer to the door, "who are you?"
"I-I'm Wen Ning, I-I came to give some herbs to him," Wen Ning stuttered.
"He was his by a whip a while ago, do you have anything for bruises or cuts?" Xue Yang asked.
"Y-yes," Wen Ning passed a small bag and bottle to the man, "th-those are for p-pain."
"Thank you Wen Ning," Xue Yang said, "he and I will owe you a lot."
"N-no, it's f-fine," Wen Ning said, "I-I should go," he ran away without another word and Xue Yang smiled.
He went back to Wei Ying and shook his shoulder, making sure he's between the man and the dog. Wei Ying opened his eyes and saw Xue Yang, "What do you want?" He whined, sitting up.
"A boy named Wen Ning came and brought us some herbs for the whip injures," Xue Yang said, "let me see them."
Wei Ying nodded and was about to show the man his wounds when he got a thought, "Lan Zhan is hurt," he said, "we should save these for him."
Xue Yang sighed, "Always thinking about others as usual, at least take this for the pain," he gave the man the bottle who took it. He took a small pill out and swallowed it.
"There," Wei Ying said, "happy?"
"Very," Xue Yang said, "and since you're not using the herbs I won't either."
"Xue Yang," Wei Ying whined, "just because I do something doesn't mean you have to do it too."
"We're in this together Wei Wuxian," Xue Yang said, "whether you like it or not."
Wei Ying sighed, "Fine, but next time you better not do it."
"I won't," Xue Yang said, "now let's wait for Wen Chao to get us out of here."
"Yeah," Wei Ying said, "also did you say Wen Ning?"
Xue Yang nodded, "Yeah, why?"
"Nothing, he just came to Cloud Recesses for a while too," Wei Ying said.
"Oh," Xue Yang heard footsteps outside the door, "someone's coming," he whispered. Wei Ying nodded and looked at the door that opened a moment after.
"Are you still alive?" Wen Chao asked as he walked in.
"Yeah," Xue Yang said, "you forgot he knows me."
Wen Chao frowned deeply and turned to the dog, "You damn dog! Do we feed you too much? Why couldn't you do one simple thing?"
The dog whimpered and moved back at the loud voice, as if it was saying sorry. Wen Chao clicked his tongue before turning to Wei Ying and Xue Yang, "You got lucky this time, but next time I won't be as easy on you."
Xue Yang scoffed, "Nothing is hard anymore," he said smirking. Wen Chao huffed and walked away, Xue Yang stood up and walked away with Wei Ying.
They went outside to the lined up people and got where they belonged. "Where were you?" Xingchen asked when he saw them.
"They wouldn't let us out if the dungeon," Xue Yang said, "I don't know why but they did."
Xingchen sighed and looked at Wei Ying, "Look at you, your so pale."
Wei Ying smiled, "It's nothing."
"Serves you right going in there, maybe that'll teach you to not mess around," Jiang Cheng snapped.
"Yeah, I definitely won't do anything," Wei Ying said, "one time there was enough."
"Is it just me who's hungry?" Xue Yang asked.
"No, I am too," Wei Ying said, "do they have any food here?"
"What do you think this is?" Huaisang asked joining in their conversation, "Gusu? They barely gave us food."
Everyone but Xingchen and Xue Yang looked uncomfortable, "Here," Jiang Cheng said eventually, "it's just bread but it'll do." He handed Wei Ying a bun of bread who took it gladly.
"Xue Yang, do you want some," Wei Ying offered.
"Only a bite, you need it more than I do," Xue Yang said, he took a bite out of the bread and smiled, "I never thought bread would be so good."
Xingchen smiled fondly, "Did they not feed you there?"
"No," Xue Yang shook his head, "we were also meant to get out sooner but they decided not to let us out."
"What was in there?" Huaisang asked curiously.
"Just a dog," Xue Yang said, "it was big though."
"Just a dog?" Wei Ying asked, "It was a monster! It could've killed us!"
"Not with me yelling at it," Xue Yang said.
"Alright, stop arguing and eat the bread," Xingchen said, "we have something important today by the looks of it."
Just as he said that Wen Chao walked out with a young woman next to him, they stood before the crowd, "Everyone," he said, "we are going to go look for something. First a cave, and then the monster in it, understood?"
    Everyone nodded, "What is looking for a monster?" Xue Yang muttered.
    "Probably to give something to Wen Ruohan," Wei Ying said.
     "Maybe," Xue Yang said.
     "Who's that woman next to him?" Xingchen asked.
     "That's his lover," Jiang Cheng said, "Wang Lingjiao, she follows him everywhere. She isn't from any clan, she's just a maid."
    "Wen Chao chose her because she's pretty I'm sure," Wei Ying huffed.
     "Yeah, she isn't bad looking actually," Xue Yang said observing the woman.
     "She's probably rude," Xingchen said bitterly.
     Xue Yang heard the disgust in the man's voice, "Do you not like her?"
    "No, she looks like a whore," Xingchen soat.
    "Xiao Xingchen! Watch your language!" Xue Yang said.
   "Well it's true," Xingchen scoffed and flipped his sleeve, putting his hand behind his back.
    "I think she's pretty," Xue Yang said.
    "Is that all you care about?" Wei Ying asked.
    "No, for me to like her she has to be nice, and fun to tease, and come from a good family," Xue Yang said.
   "Take Uncle then," Wei Ying said smiling.
   "What?" Xingchen said, "No I'm fine, I don't need any lovers."
    "Sure you don't," Wei Ying saif, "the other day you were talking about how you wante-"
    "Shut up," Xingchen interrupted, "I never said anything."
    Wei Ying laughed, "Why are you being mean all of a sudden? Is it because of what Xue Yang said? Do you like her?"
    "No!" Xingchen said, "I just said I don't like her!"
    "That's what everyone says," Wei Yinf said before turning back around.
    "Xiao Xingchen, starboy, you alright?" Xue Yang whispered.
    "I'm fine," Xingchen snapped.
    "Relax, if you like her it's fine," Xue Yang teased, "I'm sure a lot of people do."
    "You-!"
    "Time to go!" Wen Chao yelled as he walked away with the Lingjiao beside him. Everyone followed and walked behind the couple that soon got on horses.
    They walked while the Wen's were on horses and got to a forest. "Search!" Wen Chao said, he got off his horse and helped Lingjiao down.
   Everyone separated and walked their own separate ways, searching for something that could be important.
