Wei Ying woke up and the first thing he did was look at the notes he took. He had only one resolution.
"Wen Qing," he said when he saw the woman, "I figured out how to fix Jiang Cheng's core. Well not fix it, but he can finally have one."
"I know what you're going to say and my answer is no," Wen Qing said sternly.
"Why not? It's the only way," Wei Ying said, "please let me do this for him. Sect Leader Jiang and Madam Yu told me to keep him safe and protect him with my life, how can I do that if he can't take care of himself. He needs a golden core to protect himself, I won't always be here."
"Fine, but there's a chance that you won't survive it," Wen Qing said after a moment.
"What is it?"
"50%" the woman said.
Wei Ying gulped, "I'm willing to take that chance."
"Wei Wuxian," a voice said, "I can do it."
"Xue Yang no," Wei Ying said, "I don't want you to end up dying during the process. I'd rather take that risk."
"Why can you do it and not me?" Xue Yang asked.
"Because he's my brother, and I owe him," Wei Ying said.
"Why do you owe him? For strangling you? For yelling at you and making you feel like a disappointment?" Xue Yang asked, "You don't owe him anything."
"Because I love him," Wei Ying said, he had tears in his eyes and was breathing heavily, "he's my brother and I love him. I don't care what he does to me, just as long as he's happy and safe I'm fine."
Xue Yang nodded slowly, "Fine, but I'm giving you mine."
"No, you need it, I don't need anything," Wei Ying said.
"How will you wield a sword?" Xue Yang asked.
"I can do something else," Wei Ying said.
"Fine, but if you end up almost dying I'm giving you mine," Xue Yang stated.
"Alright," Wei Ying said smiling. Xue Yang pulled the man into a tight embrace and smiled.
"You're brave," he whispered.
"No, I'm just willing to take risks like you," Wei Ying whispered back. They laughed and pulled away, Xue Yang nodded and walked away.
It was dark and Yanli was dabbing the sweat off if Jiang Cheng's forehead. She heard footsteps and turned around to see Wei Ying walking towards her, "Yanli," he said.
"A-Xian," the woman replied, she smiled but began coughing.
Wei Ying grabbed her arm and said, "Yanli, you haven't recovered completely. Don't stay up and sleep." He leaned down to pick up a tray of food but was stopped.
"A-Xian, come here," Yanli said, she led the man to sit down and felt tears in her eyes. She caressed the man's face gently, "A-Xian, you are tired."
Wei Ying shook his head, "No, I'm not. I have to read more books, there must be records on how to make a core again," he still wanted to see if there was a way without giving up his own. He suddenly got an idea, "Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan will be able to help me," he stood up but his sister grabbed his arm.
"A-Xian," she said, "come," she pulled the man closer to her and stood up, "a-Xian, you are tired. I need you to get sleep. I don't want you to collapse when a-Cheng gets better."
"Yanli," Wei Ying said softly, tears starting to fall, "maybe it is all my fault."
"What are you saying?" Yanli asked, her voice cracking.
"Maybe Madam Yu was right, I am the one to blame," the man said.
"To blame for what?" Yanli asked crying, "The death of my parents? The massacre if the Jiang Clan?" She raised her voice a bit, "The loss of a-Cheng's golden core? It has come to this situation, blaming won't help! Or change anything!" She fell to the seat and cried.
"A-Xian, my parents are gone. A-Cheng is ill. We have to live on our own now, you are my only family. I can't loose you either! Or I will really be the only one in the world!"
Wei Ying knelt down next to her and grabbed her hand, "Yanli," he whispered, his voice cracking.
"A-Xian, you promised me," the crying woman said, "we will go back to Lotus Pier." Wei Ying broke down and cried, he laid his head on his sister's lap as they both cried.
Unknown to them Xingchen and Wen Qing were standing outside the door, listening. Xingchen had tears in his eyes and Wen Qing was looking down.
Xingchen walked away to a random room and closed the door, "Xingchen?" A voice asked.
He turned around, "Xue Yang," he whispered, he wiped his tears and looked to the side, "uh sorry. I didn't mean to walk into your room, I'll be going now."
"Wait," Xue Yang said, he stood up and walked to the man who was now facing the door, "let me see your face."
"Why?" Xingchen asked.
"Xiao Xingchen turn around," Xue Yang said in a dark voice. Xingchen shuddered and slowly turned around.
"I'm sorry," he whispered and broke down, "I'm so sorry."
Xue Yang looked at him in shock, "For what? What happened Xingchen?"
Xingchen cried even harder and pushed his face into Xue Yang's shoulder, "I couldn't hold it in anymore, I'm sorry."
Xue Yang gently held the man, "Shh darling, it's alright," he whispered, "you can cry all you want. I won't judge."
The man was crying hard, he was gripping Xue Yang's arm with a hand and the other was wrapped around the man's neck. He tried to stop himself from crying but couldn't, he sobbed and tightened his grip on Xue Yang.
"I didn't want to cry," Xingchen said between sobs, "I'm sorry."
"It's alright, I don't mind," Xue Yang assured the man, "you can cry. Cry all you need to."
Xingchen cried for a couple more minutes before calming down. He pulled away a little bit and wiped his tears, his eyes were bloodshot and puffy and his face was blotchy. "I'm alright," he whispered.
"Are you sure?" Xue Yang asked. Their faces were close, almost an inch apart.
The man nodded, "I'm fine, sorry for just barging in."
"It's alright," Xue Yang said, "I don't care."
Xingchen looked into Xue Yang's eyes and saw something sweet in them, he didn't realize he was leaning in forward until he felt something soft brush against his lips. He pulled back with a soft gasp but was pulled back by a hand behind his head and another wrapped around his waist.
