2013

The police sirens blared, causing an echo in the ironically open front-yard of the house. People's contrasting stances mingled in the air, making the atmosphere tenser than before. A majority of them were vouching for the man's innocence and that how the family was such an affable one, outrightly deeming the man's framing as inappropriate. While the other set of judging mouths let out whatever downgrading statements they could in order to ride the bandwagon, not wanting to spare their neighbour even for the old time's sake.

Eunbi had cast a watchful eye over the crime scene, for a mere slip of caution could cost her a years-long sentence in prison, along with a hefty fine like a cherry on top. After straying her gaze around for a bit, she could spot two policemen dragging the man out of his own house rather inhumanely.

After all, a murder convict deserved to be treated like that by the police. The only exception in this case being his cluelessness as to how to prove his innocence.

As the two cops made way for the man to get him past through the swarm of his agitated neighbors, a subtly lustrous object acquired his attention, making him jerk his neck in the direction abruptly. A pendant, with a gem cut in a linear manner as the latter hung loose from its chain, stroke a feeling of déjà-vu into him. Immediately starting to jump up and down to struggle himself out of the policemen's grip, his face depicted seamless wrath.

"That's my wife's pendant, let go of m— you bastards! I'm being framed! That bitch must have something to do with the murder of my family. How does she have that? How do you have that thing on you?" The man yelped, bursting into tears bitterly.

Before the police could locate the person that the man was referring to, Eunbi had fled the scene as she concluded that staying there could probably result to be adverse for her. She even wore the pendant—that the man had been supposedly pointing at— off her neck, placing it safely in the depths of her pocket to avoid further suspicions.

"I know you're awake Miss Nam, you can't fool me like last time." A voice commented, though Eunbi could not decipher its reference for the insides of her head were still hazy.

She arched both of her eyebrows, bringing one of her hand to her forehead to caress it slightly— with eyes still closed. Gradually fluttering her eyes open, she discerned the very figure that she herself had wanted to turn up before her, his face representing candid worry.

"You keep getting yourself hurt. Not trying to be unprofessional, but do you have some sort of kink?" The way Yoongi had put it with so much genuineness made it harder for Eunbi to sustain her amusement. And so, she ended up giggling at his face.

"No but really, in all seriousness, you need to take care of yourself. I don't know how you end up getting in such situations since I don't want to meddle in your personal life, but that doesn't mean I won't scold you for being so reckless. You live alone, making yourself an easy prey. Not at all predicting that you'll be getting aimed at like this in the future as well, but prevention is always better than cure, right?" Yoongi's voice dimmed towards the end, heart sinking at such a sight.

"What do you want me to do then, sir?" Eunbi chuckled lightly, but her expression almost changed drastically when she managed to make out what he had meant by those words, "Are you implying that I should quit this job?"

Yoongi nodded in approval, causing her to blurt out in a sudden manner, "How will I get by, then? How will I survive? How will I afford the dingy apartment that I'm currently living in?"

"Your humor doesn't seem to spare even trying times." Yoongi playfully remarked as he bobbed his head in correspondence, a glint visible in his eyes. But he did not take much time to get back to the main point of discussion, "You can do one thing, though. I know this job is important for you and all, but you can still protect yourself while working for such a department, right?"

"I will. I will try not to be oblivious of what's coming for me. I'll even double-check the traffic lights while crossing—"

"Okay, enough. I see that you got my point, Miss Nam. I have a question, by the way..." Yoongi trailed off, unsure of whether burdening Eunbi with such assumptions of his was a right thing that he was doing. However, a faint consent from her side assured him of his decision, "What happened few hours back wasn't something coincidental. He didn't look like someone who'd go on a killing spree just because he's obsessed with killing. Him charging his weapon at you seemed kind of... intentional, I would say? I know this sounds absurd, but do you know him by any chance?" Yoongi mused, asking Eunbi with uncertainty lacing his voice for yet another time.

A spell of unannounced silence began to engulf their surroundings, with neither of them knowing how to get past such a period of uncomfortable quietness.

any guesses as to why the faceclaims of eunbi change with years?

also, i had mistakenly named the year as 2010 in the previous chapter. but since this incident doesn't fit in the ongoing timeline of the past, i had to put it somewhere in near future like 2013. makes more sense to me.
