The Best Thing

Niall and Louis shared a meal and laughed like no time had passed between the two of them.

He wished he would have stopped being so jealous of his friend long enough to see that he really missed him.

He should have done a lot of things differently. But he can't change that now. All he could do was move forward and prove himself to the ones that mattered most.

As much as Louis liked his little escape from reality with Niall, he felt a nagging at the back of his mind that reminded him of all that was waiting to be dealt with.

"I should get going." Louis broke it to him as he stood up from his chair. "I gotta find Harry. We didn't leave things on the best of terms."

Niall shifted in his chair uncomfortably. Clearly, he was still a sore subject for them. "Okay," he agreed.

Louis started gathering his things and making his way towards the door.

"You know..." Niall added as Louis' hand was on the door. "I know you two love each other, but sometimes I wonder if you're the best thing for each other."

Louis thought it over for a moment. "So do I." He admitted. He knew all along that maybe they weren't the best thing for each other. But being without him was the worst thing for Louis and he foolishly chose to believe Harry felt the same way. "I'll see you later." Louis waved him goodbye and then set off to find his boy.

The drive back was easier the second time around. He tried to clear his head but all he could think about was how awful Harry must be feeling. What he must think of Louis. He wouldn't blame him for thinking he was weak. He wouldn't blame him if he hated him for lying to him for so long.

He said he loved him, but was it just to get him to stay? How could he love someone so selfish and damaged?

Louis found himself sitting in his car dreading this confrontation. His hands were shaking just thinking that at any point he could lose control again and just further prove to Harry that he was a mess.

When he got the courage to walk up to the house, he rang the doorbell and immediately heard footsteps stomping their way to the door. He figured Harry wanted to kill him for the way they left things.

He swung the door open and took in his sights. Louis was standing there with his hands in his coat pocket and his heart on his sleeve.

Harry took him into his arms with no hesitation. Louis almost lost his balance but he knew he was safe in these arms. He laid his head against his chest and let a few tears go. "I'm sorry." He whispered.

"You scared me so much." He tightened his grip around him.

Louis held him by his waist and refused to let go. "I shouldn't have run away." He looked up to see his face.

Harry had been crying too. "I shouldn't have pushed you away."

"No, baby. It's not your fault." Louis brought both his hands up to hold his face. "I'm a fucking idiot. I should have just told you sooner." He stroked his hair to give him the slightest bit of comfort.

"But I didn't let you. This whole time..." He choked out his sorrows. "I should have been there for you."

Louis smiled genuinely. "You were, love, " Louis ran his thumb over his cheek. "You always are."

Harry squeezed his eyes shut and let the last of his tears fall before pressing his lips to Louis'. Even through the saltiness of their tears, he only tasted the sweetness on his lips.

Harry broke the kiss against Louis' wishes. "I'm yours." He told him, still breathing hard from their kiss. "I promise I won't let anything get between us anymore. I won't believe anything anyone else tells me until I hear it from you. I won't push you away anymore. I'm-I'm ready." He searched Louis' eyes for confirmation that he was just as insane for wanting this as he was.

"You're sure this is what you want?" Louis couldn't believe the words coming out of Harry's mouth. He had waited forever for this.

"I'm sure that I love you." He answered without hesitation. "That much I've always been sure about. Everything else seems very uncertain," he jested "but I'm not afraid anymore." He straightened his posture and stuck out his chest.

"I love you so much." Louis finally felt the weight lift. For once in his life, he felt like the stars were aligned and things were working in his favor. His heart was so full he almost couldn't stand it.

"Hey, um..." Louis smiled cheek to cheek. "Your dad's not home is he?"

Harry bit his lip as a smile stretched over his face. "Nope." He blushed.

"And your sister?" He played innocent but they both knew what was on his mind.

"Still in class," He whispered against Louis' cheek before leaving a small peck.

"Good to know." He grabbed hold of his hand and led him through the front door.

Louis couldn't wipe the stupid grin on his face off as he led the younger boy to his own room.

Harry closed the door behind them and pulled Louis in by his waist with an angst he hadn't realize was in him. "Slow down there, love," Louis giggled. "I'm not going anywhere." He assured him pressed to his broad chest. Harry had been holding him so tight it was like he thought he'd float away like a helium balloon if he let go.

"Promise?" Harry pressed his forehead to his and squeezed his eyes shut.

Louis got on his tiptoes to kiss the boy's forehead. "I promise." He pressed one more kiss to the tip of his nose. "I'm never letting you go."
