Chapter 30 - Make or Break

Toni waited patiently for Sam's justification but Sam was still unable to get a word out of his mouth. She gave him her undivided attention whereas Sam couldn't even hold eye contact with her. Sam puffed a lungful of air while mustering all his willpower. And when he finally retrieved his voice, ready to speak, a shaft of light hit his eyes. He turned aside so he's no longer looking at the light's direction.

Toni, on the other hand, averted her gaze  from Sam and checked the lounge area where the bright light was coming from. Trying not to show fear, she entered the doorway and scanned the room. She spotted the shadowy figure holding the flashlight near the stairs. Her eyes concentrated firmly on the staircase to identify who it was but the gleaming light was betraying her.  She frowned in irritation.

She jolted lightly when the person spoke in a surprised manner, "Tin?" Soon enough, she heard a click and the room was shadowy and pitch dark again.

"O, Kuya Jeni? Ano pong ginagawa niyo dito sa taas?" She asked as soon as she recognized who the voice belongs to, her eyebrows creasing on her forehead.

"May narinig kasi ako kanina sa baba. Parang may taong nakapasok dito sa bahay. Bakit gising ka na?" Kuya Jeni returned the question to her. He was agitated on his spot as he tried to examine the room, looking for any possible threats.

Toni blocked his line of sight when she realised that Kuya Jeni still haven't found out about Sam's presence in the house. She gulped and deliberately lied in hushed tone, "Ah wala kuya. Nagutom kasi ako kaya pumunta ako sa kitchen. Kumuha lang ng snacks."

"Ah, ganun ba," He sighed in relief and straightened himself. "Akala ko naman may nakapasok ng magnanakaw sa bahay.  Sige, matutulog na ulit ako."

Kuya Jeni turn on his heels and retreated. Toni watched him walk away, still on pins and needles that something might happen in a matter of seconds. When she was positive and convinced that there's no one else in the room, she wend her way over to Sam. She wasn't letting him get away without explanation.

She saw Sam hiding behind the tall clay pot beside the entryway. Sam shot his head up to her fretfully and his eyes immediately met hers. He stood up in a bolt and straightened his shirt.

"Sam, bakit ka ba talaga nandito?" She queried once again, pressing the words strongly. His stomach was in knots one more time. His nerves got the best of him and he lost all his determination and willpower to tell her everything. His mind fogged up. The first words that registered to his mind to tell her were, "Aalis na si Ashley mamaya. She texted me last night. I was wondering if you could help me buy a gift for her before she leaves."

Toni's face softened but she was still puzzled why Sam had to go to her house just to ask her for help. "Pwede mo namang itext na lang sa akin. Bakit pumunta ka pa talaga dito, Sam?"
