"This is not going to be easy, are you sure he's capable of handling her?"

"I'm more than sure, I know he's capable."

"Very well, Doyle. Is the third-party aware of the situation yet?"

"All in due time."

Episode IV: Xander's Bodyguard

Sunnydale, 2002

James and Xander were walking through the streets of Sunnydale that afternoon, their destination more than known to the two. Xander didn't keep it hidden how nervous he was, preparing to face his friends, and possibly his very pissed-off fiancé, after walking out on his own wedding.

They had already briefly stopped by Xander's apartment, so that he could change out of his suit, and then the Magic Box to find Anya, finding it completely locked and closed. Now the two were approaching the front garden of the Summers' residence, causing Xander to start visibly shaking.

"I can't do it." Xander said suddenly, turning to look at James.

"Can't do what?" James asked.

"Face them again... What if they don't want to talk to me again? What if they take Anya's side and hate my guts?" Xander explained, putting his head in his hands.

James looked at Xander with sadness, "When I had to face Julie and the whole council again after being gone for nearly two years, I'll admit that I didn't think they would welcome me back immediately. But if it's the right people, Xander, who really love you and understand you, they'll forgive you, no matter what you've done." James said to Xander, watching him carefully.

Xander stood there motionless for a few seconds, considering his options. He sighed heavily and turned around to head up the garden path. James smiled at him, almost proud of himself for managing to convince Xander to do anything in his depressive state.

Xander rang the doorbell and walked in, "Hi."

James followed behind but hung back a few seconds for Xander to become reacquainted with his friends.

"Xander?" a recognisable voice said, causing James to feel a pit in his stomach. The thought of seeing Willow after so long both terrified and excited him. The three of them all hugged and James smiled lightly, still standing outside of the door. "We missed you, where were you?" Willow asked.

"I know. I tried calling, but I couldn't without..." Xander started, trailing off.

"Hey, you don't need to explain to us." Buffy told him, trying to reassure her friend that everything was okay.

"Well, actually... I might need to explain this." Xander said, motioning to the door.

James perked up from outside and took that his cue to enter. He opened the front door and walked into the foyer, facing the three.

"James?" Buffy asked, shocked at his sudden appearance.

"Hi Buffy." James greeted warmly, smiling at her. "Willow." he continued, his smile faltering slightly but he still tried to come across as genuine.

"James, what are you doing here?" Willow asked, her jaw hanging open.

"James was sent here, it's a long story." Xander jumped in, keen to stir the conversation onto a more important matter. "Is she here?"

"Oh, n-no. You want to find her?" Willow asked, sitting down, as did Buffy. The two were seemingly confused by Xander's agenda.

"I need to. Her suitcase is gone and some of her stuff. There's a 'Closed' sign on the Magic Box, which like, chills me to the bone." Xander explained.
