I couldn't sleep. I went to bed earlier than I usually do, so that I could clear my mind and forget for some hours this day. But it was impossible; the harder I tried, the more my mind didn't feel like sleeping.
It's 8:00 am, and I'm so done lying in bed, so I get up and go downstairs. Nobody else's awake yet. I kinda like it better.
I go to the kitchen, not hungry at all, but still I get a bowl and pour milk and cereal. Then I walk outside and sit on the edge of the pool, dipping my feet in the water. It's really cold, but soon I get used to it.
It's weird, because I feel so good chilling by myself everyday, but also I want company; someone with whom enjoy the moment. I'm a person who likes being surrounded by people but also alone. I don't know how to explain it.
Soon someone comes outside too.
"Vinnie awake before noon!" By the voice I know it's Justin. He stretches and then sits by my side. "Wanna go to the skatepark today?"
I'd say yes, but...
"I slept so bad, bro. I think I'm gonna stay at home today."
"All day?"
Doesn't sound horrible for me.
"I think so."
Justin stands up.
"Well, in case you change your mind, you know where to find us. I'm gonna eat some breakfast, too."
I play video games all morning. The boys left by ten, so I've been alone in the house for three hours. I should take advantage and recover the lost sleeping hours, but I'm not sleepy, although I can't stop yawning.
I order some food and eat it in the living room while watching Netflix. I see my skateboard in a corner. It's so tempting...
Fuck it, I'm going to the skatepark.
As soon as I get there, I see my friends.
"Hey guys."
"I knew you'd eventually come. You always do." Justin says. He's not wrong, I can't live without skating.
Today there are a lot of people. Fortunately I manage to do some tricks without bumping into other skaters.
A couple hours later, I sit with Dennis, another great friend, and drink an energy drink. He tells me he's going back to his hometown next week for a month. I'm gonna miss him.
Even though the sky's is getting darker, there are still plenty of people. A little less than when I came, though. I look at the entrance and I see a group coming in. They look strangely familiar to me... Wait.
I recognize Summer. She looks around and our eyes meet. She waves her hand, tells something to her friends and walks towards me.
"Vinnie?"
"That's me." She smiles.
"What a coincidence."
The fact that if I decided to stay the rest of the day at home I wouldn't have seen her is crazy to think.
"Are you gonna skate until closure?" I ask.
"Yep, probably."
I notice there are only two boys trying tricks in the pool.
"Hey, why don't we show each other what we can do in the pool?" She looks at it and then back at me, not very convinced.
"I've been trying for a while and it scares me as hell."
"Come on, we'll fix that." I look at Dennis. "Wanna join?"
He takes a sip of the drink.
"Later, maybe."
Summer and I reach the pool.
"You first." She says. I giggle.
"Alright, but you go next." Now she giggles.
I hop on the board and slide down. I get a little nervous knowing that she's watching, but luckily I don't fall.
"That was... really great." I notice in her eyes I impressed her. "I'm gonna look so stupid."
"Sure not."
She rolls her eyes and hop on her skate. She stands for a while.
"I told you this really scares me. I don't wanna fall and look ridiculous."
"Hey, don't say that. What is skate without falling."
"I know, but..."
"You got this. And if it's not today, one day you will."
She sighs.
"OK."
She slides down without difficulty, then does a couple turns, but when doing the third, her skate flies away.
"Shit!" She didn't fall, but still I can feel her irritation. She grabs her skate.
"See?" She seethes. I kinda find her anger cute.
"You did well, too. Seriously."
"Can we try another thing?"
"Of course. What do you like to do?"
We practiced flat ground tricks for an hour. Although we shortly know each other, it's like we've know for months. It's so cool when you click with someone so fast.
Summer's phone vibrates and she takes it from a pocket of her black cargo pants.
"My friends wanna leave." She shows disappointment on her face.
"Don't worry, we can continue next time."
"We still have pending to show each other our secret spots." She winks, and I chuckle. Then she stares to their friends for a while, maybe thinking about something. She looks back at me afterward. "You know what?, why don't we go now? It's not really far, and we can be there in ten minutes skating."
I really have nothing else to do, but I liked the idea of pranking her a little:
"I don't know..., it's so late right now..." She nods sadly, but then I push her jokingly. "Just kidding, I love the idea."
"How you dare..." She pushes me back.
