~Chloe~

I was startled by thunderclaps and the intermittent flashes of lightning. It was just a few minutes after midnight, and I was still working on my PC trying to create a new animated character. I've always wanted to create a dark animated character for a change, and here I was, on Christmas morning, making Ramsia: a 16-year-old rebel who ran away from her orphanage home.

I gave her a strawberry blond hair with a white tip and to top off her rebel look, I gave her a baseball bat that had metal thorns at the tip. By the time I was done creating her, it was 3 A.M., and it was officially Christmas. I yawned loudly and went straight to bed, for I was beyond exhausted. This was the second animated character I created, hence the exhaustion.

I spent my entire Christmas Eve drawing and starting a new animated character to add to my collection. After a while, I decided to binge read another one of my favorite books on Wattpad before creating and publishing two chapters 8 and 9, of my story, "How to get away with bullies" on Wattpad.

I was too tired to do anything, so I just went straight to bed. Twelve hours later, I woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I went to take a warm bath because it was raining heavily. Once I was done having my bath in my walk-in bathroom, I wore a crimson brown jogger and hood because it was also unimaginably cold inside.

Once I was sure I was adequately covered from the freezing weather, I took my iPhone from my bedside table, switched it on and headed downstairs to prepare breakfast. Immediately I entered the kitchen, my phone buzzed in my hand; I let out a groan when I saw the caller ID: Zoe.

She wanted to FaceTime but I wanted nothing to do with that, but the thought of our parents included in the background of the videocall made me rethink declining the call.
I let out a sigh, knowing just how the conversation was going to end already. Well,

"I might as well pick the call and get it over with," I said under my breath.

"Hey Zoeee, merry Christmas―!" I exclaimed with fake enthusiasm and a half smile, just in case my parents were in the background. I was surprised when Nafeesat's face popped up instead. "That's a first," I said, considering Zoe never lets anyone else touch her phone. Something must be wrong, I thought.

"Nafeesat, what's wrong? How are you? Is everything alright? Where's Zoe? Well, not like I care or anything...," I finished, with a touch of feigned indifference. "Shhh, calm down Chloe. Zoe is fine, just being her real bitch self, you know how she gets..."

"Ah, that's the twin sister I know and definitely do not love," I said with humor laced in my voice. She gave me a steering look and I just cleared my throat instead, giving her a pulsed lip smile. "Why is your sister so darn rude, Chloe? She did it again, to your Mom this time. When will she learn that this life isn't all about being queen―?"

"Nafeesat!!! Is that the JoJo's Instagram handle you're stalking or my old hag of a sister??!" Zoe's voice yelled, interrupting our conversation. I could see the panicked look on Nafeesat's face and I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that the conversation would soon be terminated.

She gave me an apologetic and understanding look and then mouthed, "Merry Christmas Chloe." With that, she ended the FaceTime videocall. I let out a sigh and said "Merry Christmas, Nafeesat," out loud, believing the wind will deliver my message to her.

I dropped my phone on the kitchen counter and went to make breakfast. I brought out a big glass bowl which I poured flour into, relying on my instincts for measurement. After adding milk, eggs, honey, a little butter and a lot of chocolate chips, I mixed it all up before putting it into the waffle machine. Once I was done, I started making homemade vanilla ice creams too. When everything was done, I sat comfortably in the living room and started another anime series. "Baga Naruto"

I said simultaneously with the TV. I was currently on Season 1 Episode 25 of Naruto, and couldn't help the laughter that was threatening to burst out. I had watched every single episode of the anime, but it never got old. I had barely started Episode 26 when my phone vibrated beside me. I took a bite out of my sixth waffle before answering swiping on accept call.

. "Good morning― afternoon. Good afternoon, Mom."

"How are you dear? I hope you slept well."

She's nice; are we in trouble again?

"Splendid, yours?" I managed. "Same as always. Merry Christmas Chloe, and uh... the box wrapped in purple under the left side of the tree is yours."

"Aww, thanks Mom, you shouldn't have. Thank you though. Merry Christmas too. I would've given you something for Christmas, but you're halfway across the world."

"Yeah...," she said, chuckling nervously at my last statement. Before she got the chance to end the sour conversation, Dad poked his head in, dragging Zoe along. I had no other choice than to fake my excitement and enthusiasm again, like they didn't offend me or like there weren't the reason I was celebrating Christmas all by myself in Nigeria in the first place.

"Good afternoon Dad...

"... Zoe," I added. "Merry Christmas!"
I made sure I sounded convincing. The irking silence that followed was quite defeaning; I still held up my fake smile. Zoe just rolled her eyes at me while Dad glared at me.

"What is good about the afternoon, eh, Chloe? What is good about the afternoon? What were you doing since morning that you couldn't call? We even tried to reach you, but your phone was switched off. What really is the―"

"Oh, enough, Raymon. It's Christmas for Christ's sake; cut her some slack and leave her be," Mom said, interrupting Dad at his attempt to scold me again. But of course, Dad wasn't having any of it as he fired back. "Oh, really Martha! That's why she would never learn. You keep indulging and letting her lack proper manners she would need to survive the outside world!"

"Oh, really Raymon! Why do you always have to pin this on me? We are raising this ch―"
Mom was saying but was interrupted by Zoe. "Congratulations, Chloe. I'm sure you must be thrilled at the sight of Mom and Dad arguing on Christmas day." I batted my eyelids and cursed under my breath. They say I'm the rude and ill-mannered twin.

Boy, they don't know rough, rude and bad-mannered when it hits them in the face. This has honestly got to stop. I sighed when the awkward silence Zoe's statement created didn't seem to go away. "Zoe that's not true," I said, trying to clear the air. If I had known this was how the conversation was going to end, I would have avoided it all and ignored the call.

"You couldn't even defend―"

"Raymon, that's enough. We'll talk to you later Chloe. Merry Christmas, bye."

The FaceTime ended in that tone brought the conversation to an end and my phone went blank. I sighed deeply and mumbled to my screensaver that had popped up, a picture of Rapunzel staring lovingly at her Chameleon.
"Merry Christmas, family."

This was officially the worst Christmas celebration ever. I fondled the TV remoted before eventually pressing the play button to resume Episode 26. I took another bite from the waffle I was eating; a lone tear escaped my eyes. I sniffed, wiping it away, trying my best to stay happy while watching my favorite anime.
