Klaus and Kai still didn't like each other. That much was obvious. But the constant tension had started to shift—ever so slightly. Baby steps, Elizabeth told herself. As long as they both wanted to be in her life, they'd have to figure out how to coexist without trying to kill each other every time they shared a room.

Still, there were more pressing concerns than babysitting two emotionally stunted men.

Like the dead werewolf guard outside the twins' nursery.

Elizabeth's heart dropped the second she saw the body. Instinct took over.

She burst into the nursery and found Rebekah—no, Eva—standing over the cribs where Kolina and Kayla lay sleeping.

"But once it's turned your loved ones into enemies," Eva said in a low, eerie voice, "the demon would have consumed you whole."

Elizabeth didn't wait for another word.

"Get away from them!" she shouted, charging forward. Her hand latched onto Eva's arm, siphoning her magic. The scream that tore from Eva's throat was sharp and furious. Elizabeth didn't flinch. She slammed Eva's head into the dresser with all the force she could muster.

Eva collapsed to the floor, but not for long. Before Elizabeth could even reach the cribs, she was flung backward, crashing into the wall with a loud bang.

Klaus was through the door seconds later, his face twisted in rage.

"Rebekah! What are you doing?!"

He lunged—but Eva was faster. A pain-infliction spell dropped him to the ground.

Elizabeth scrambled upright, but Eva cast another spell before she could retaliate. Magic constricted her throat like a vice, and she fell to her knees, choking.

Klaus snarled, dragging himself across the floor, pure fury in his eyes. With one final push, he managed to rake his claws across Eva's thigh.

She shrieked.

The spell shattered as Eva stumbled back, wounded and cornered. Realizing she was outmatched, she didn't hesitate—she hurled herself out the window and vanished into the night.

Elizabeth crawled toward the cribs, trembling, heart pounding, but the twins were calm. Peaceful. Like none of it had happened.

Klaus crouched beside her, silent, breath heavy. They exchanged a look—shaken but relieved.

Then—

"Whoa. That girl is totally crazy pants. You were right."

They both turned sharply. Kai stood in the doorway, completely unfazed by the chaos, casually snacking on one of the twins' food pouches.
