Kai had written his letter. Burned it. Watched the ashes scatter.
And still, he felt nothing but worse.

He even wrote another—this time to Josette—with Elizabeth's help. But cloaking spells, locator charms, even scrying turned up nothing. Jo was gone.

So they headed to the one place left that might get it to her: the Salvatore Boarding House.

"Hello?" Kai called as they stepped through the front doors.

Inside, Elena jerked away from Damon. "No. That's impossible—why would he..."

Damon closed his eyes with a grimace. "He didn't. Please tell me he didn't. He merged. He packed. He's supposed to be halfway to Portland with his psycho sister."

"Still here!" Elizabeth called as she stepped in behind Kai. "And still psycho."

Kai whistled low. "Wow. Forgot how big this place was. Looks like a cupcake convention exploded in here."

He licked frosting from his finger, unapologetic. "Yum. Hope we're not interrupting."

Damon glared. "What are you doing here?"

"Rude," Elizabeth pouted, crossing her arms. "You're barely a century old, and you act like you own the place."

Kai chuckled. "Funniest thing. I need your help."

He pulled a folded letter from his jacket. Josette was written across the front.

Elena's arms crossed instantly. "Why would we give that to Jo?"

"That's family drama," Elizabeth shot back. "And the last time I checked, your last name's not Parker."

Kai shrugged. "Can't find her with locator spells. So, props to her for the vanishing act. Under normal circumstances, I'd be, like, super into gouging her belly button out with a spoon, but... not this time."

Damon scowled. "Why would we help you?"

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Oh my God, it's a letter. Not a bomb. You people are exhausting."

Kai raised the letter slightly. "I feel bad. I just want her to read it. That's it."

Elena's gaze sharpened. "You feel... bad?"

Kai tilted his head. "Shocker, I know. Sociopaths aren't supposed to feel things like remorse, right?"

"Because you don't," she snapped.

Elizabeth intervened, voice sharp. "You don't know the first thing about psychology, Elena."

"I know sociopaths don't feel guilt," she countered.
