As Elizabeth made her way downstairs in search of Klaus, she froze in her tracks—eyes widening in disbelief at the sight before her.
Klaus had someone pinned against the wall by the neck. But not just anyone. The man in his grasp was someone she hadn't seen in nearly two decades. Someone she recognized instantly.
He looked exactly the same.
It couldn't be. It shouldn't be.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Kai.
Her brother.
The one who was supposed to be dead.
Dad said Josette killed him. Said the ascendant was destroyed. Said there was no way to bring him back. She had believed him. What else could she have done?
Was this a ghost? A trick of Dahlia's? Some illusion meant to lure her into vulnerability?
But her heart knew.
It was him.
It had to be him—because the alternative would destroy her.
Her mouth fell open. Her heart slammed against her ribs as she took a step forward. Klaus still had Kai by the throat, and her brother's face was starting to flush from lack of air.
"Nik, STOP!" she shouted, panic gripping her.
Klaus turned sharply, his expression unreadable, but his hand didn't release.
"That's my brother," she said, her voice sharp as a blade as she stepped closer, glaring at him with a fury that startled even Klaus.
He loosened his grip at last. Kai fell to the floor, coughing and clutching his neck.
"I told him I was your brother," Kai wheezed, his voice indignant, tinged with mock innocence. "But he tried to kill me anyway. This guy's insane."
Klaus scoffed. "He attacked me," he snapped. "You expect me to believe this isn't one of Dahlia's tricks?"
Elizabeth ignored his suspicion. "Because I know him. That's my brother."
Kai nodded from the floor. "I don't even know this 'Dahlia' lady. Is she hot, at least?" he added with a smirk. "Because the last girl I saw in eighteen years axed me. Which, yeah, I may have earned—what with the arrow and the stabbing—but I still think we had a shot."
Elizabeth's expression darkened. "Well, she shouldn't have laid a finger on you. I hope she's rotting in a ditch."
Kai raised his eyebrows, impressed. "Wow. Remind me not to get on your bad side again."
