Klaus stood at the bar, chopping limes with a knife while speaking on the phone with Elijah. His brother was still holed up at the safe house with Cami and the twins, and Rebekah's whereabouts remained a mystery. Hayley's wedding had been handled—reluctantly, on Klaus's part. Initially, he had opposed the idea, knowing it would mean exposing the truth about their children. But, somehow, Hayley had convinced him.
"The wedding works in our favor," Klaus said, slicing through another lime with deliberate precision. "Newly empowered and ruled by Hayley, the wolves will be an asset to our family."
"I've never been to a wedding!" Elizabeth chirped from across the room, perched on a stool with a mock-serious expression. "Do you think they have a maid of honor in a doggie wedding?"
Klaus didn't look up. "That's something you'll have to discuss with Hayley, sweetheart. This is her and Jackson's wedding, after all."
On the phone, Elijah's voice came through, smooth and skeptical. "Assuming you're willing to trust Jackson with our secret. I must confess, brother, I'm surprised that you do."
"Oh, he doesn't," Elizabeth cut in, leaning toward the speakerphone. "You know how paranoid your brother is, Lijah."
There was a faint chuckle from Elijah. "What about you, Elizabeth? Do you trust Jackson?"
Elizabeth shrugged. "Honestly? Yeah. Jacky's probably the most decent person I've met. He's always been sweet to me, even when I insulted him—which is constantly, by the way." She grinned. "He's like... a golden retriever in human form."
Klaus growled under his breath, and Elizabeth rolled her eyes fondly.
"Relax. I like the bad boys." She winked at him, then continued. "But seriously, Jackson would never hurt the twins, even knowing they're yours. They're babies. And he's completely whipped by Hayley. Obsessed. I trust his intentions—I just don't think he's all that useful. Remember when he lost the moonstone rocks for the rings?"
Elijah hummed. "Regrettably, yes. That little error is the reason we turned to Francesca for the stones."
Klaus gestured with the knife as he spoke. "Faith in Jackson is merely tactical. If I'd killed him, Hayley would've turned against me. You should've seen the ferocity with which she defended him." He smirked. "It was impressive."
"I wasn't here," Elizabeth interjected, "but apparently she kicked your ass like a badass Valkyrie, so I'm very proud."
Elijah sighed, but there was clear amusement in his tone. "Still, I don't take secrets lightly. Once the wolves are changed permanently after this wedding... well, Jackson's fate becomes considerably less secure."
