They were at the cemetery—Elizabeth's least favorite place in the world.

Graves meant one thing: memory. And Elizabeth had no interest in revisiting that night—the circle of witches, the flames, the blood sigils, and the moment they tried to sacrifice her daughters. The memory clung to her skin like smoke. And Mystic Falls Cemetery wasn't helping. Moss-covered headstones, decaying mausoleums, and the scent of damp soil thick with rot... Not exactly her idea of a family reunion.

And yet—here they were.

Kai had roped in Tyler Lockwood of all people. Even hexed and twitchy, Tyler was still a wild card with rage management issues. Olivia and Lukas were technically allies—for now. They said they wanted to stop the merge.

The goal was simple: abduct Josette, restore her magic, and force her to merge with Kai.

The twins didn't want to die.
So they decided Jo should instead.

Not that it mattered. What none of them seemed to realize was that if Kai came out on top, they'd all die anyway. But then again, the family motto had always been: lie first, stab second.

Kai had already taken Jo from the hospital, ignoring Elizabeth's offer to help. "I want to do it myself," he'd said. Typical. Now they were holed up in one of the older mausoleums—stone walls crumbling, candles flickering, the scent of iron and old bones thick in the air. Josette lay unconscious on the floor, wrists bound, blood drying on her skin. Her breathing was shallow but steady.

Kai stood over her like a kid unwrapping the best Christmas gift ever, spinning the ceremonial knife between his fingers—the same knife Jo once used to store her magic. Elizabeth had located it for him, compelled some unlucky human to fetch it.

Now he twirled, beaming.

"I know I tried to kill you all when you were toddlers," he said, grinning as he waved the blade. "But it's kinda nice being with family for the holidays."

Elizabeth leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "Speak for yourself. You're all disappointments."

She nodded at Josette's limp form.

"I thought Little Jojo would have a white-picket-fence life by now. Married to a neurosurgeon, couple of blonde kids, a golden retriever. Free from our lovely coven of sociopaths. But instead?" Her lips curled. "She's dating an alcoholic vampire hunter. If he were still an Original, maybe I'd be impressed."

"We don't need the approval of a sociopath," Olivia snapped.

Kai raised a brow, amused. "So feisty."

Elizabeth clutched her chest in mock pain. "Wow. That really hurt my feelings."
