After the merge, the plan had been to leave for New Orleans.
But then Kai got sick.

Originally, they just needed closure—Kai wanted to apologize, burdened by guilt—and afterward, Elizabeth had intended to return to her daughters. But that changed the moment her brother collapsed in the hotel bathroom.

At first, it was just fatigue. Elizabeth didn't mind staying an extra night, curled up on the couch watching movies with him. But by the next morning, Kai was vomiting blood and burning up with fever. Her healing spells had little effect, which terrified her more than she let on. On the third day, she went out to get him medicine. By the fourth, he could barely move.

It had to be merge-related. There was no other explanation.

Out of options, they made their way to Josette's apartment. Elizabeth had an arm around Kai's waist, supporting his weight as he stumbled forward, pale and trembling.

They rang the doorbell. Alaric opened it, taking one look at Kai and frowning. His face was drenched in sweat, dark circles under his eyes making him look worse than dead.

"Hey," Alaric said, flatly. He immediately tried to shut the door in their faces.

Elizabeth slammed her hand against it. "Wait, wait, wait—"

Kai leaned heavily on her. "I know you hate me, but I really... really need to see my sister," he croaked.

"I think she'll pass," Alaric replied.

"It's family drama, Ricky. Go away," Elizabeth snapped. She wasn't in the mood for petty roadblocks, especially not from a human. Her brother was dying.

Alaric tried again to close the door, but this time Josette appeared behind him. She frowned in confusion. "What are you two doing here?"

"I called to tell you I was sick," Kai said weakly, "and you... you hung up on me."

Elizabeth scowled. "That was really rude, JoJo."

"I have food poisoning," Josette replied curtly. "Did the sound of me vomiting on the other end of the line not clue you in?"

Kai tried to push through the tension. "There's something I've been worried about since the merge. Because... we didn't really do it right, remember? 'You're not my twin.' 'Close enough.' It worked, sure—cool. I've even been a little nicer, in case you were wondering. But I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I think it just did because I'm—"

He stopped mid-sentence, swaying. "Where's the bathroom?"

Then he doubled over, vomiting blood onto the floor.

"Oh God," Josette gasped.

Elizabeth grimaced and supported him, rubbing his back. "It's going to be okay, I promise, Kai."
