It had been a while since Elizabeth had stepped outside the compound.
With the twins under constant watch and the growing threat of Dahlia looming over them like a stormcloud, she'd been more or less placed under house arrest. The tension was maddening. Even Kai, who usually thrived on chaos, had started bouncing off the walls.
So, against every instinct screaming in her head, Elizabeth had bundled up the twins and gone for a walk through the French Quarter with Kai. He pushed the double stroller while she walked beside him, occasionally brushing her fingers against her daughters' tiny hands, grounding herself in their presence.
She had read somewhere that keeping babies inside for too long could weaken their immune systems—or something like that. Besides, Kolina absolutely adored their walks. Her wide, curious eyes darted around constantly, always absorbing, always exploring. Her sister, on the other hand, was content to nap through the noise.
They strolled past the usual bustle—street performers, tourists with oversized cameras, locals moving with purpose. The girls cooed up at her, and Elizabeth smiled, tickling them gently.
"So," Kai said cheerfully, "I was teaching Bexy a few spells and she accidentally lit a painting on fire. I swear, it was hilarious. She looked so embarrassed. I've never seen someone suck at—"
"Language," Elizabeth cut in sharply, giving him a look.
Kai rolled his eyes. "Oh, right. Wouldn't want their first word to be 'suck.' Although, honestly? That'd be kind of cool."
Elizabeth gave him another warning glare.
"But yeah," Kai continued, grinning, "she's terrible at magic. But that just means we get to spend more time together. She's my little apprentice now. I even get to touch her hands when we do spells—her palms are so soft. Oh, and I keep cloaking myself and scaring her. It's so fun. She always screams like this—"
He launched into a shrill, British-accented impression: "Ahhh! Bloody wanker!"
Elizabeth burst out laughing despite herself. "Oh god, I remember when we used to play cloak-and-seek. Dad would've skinned us alive if he caught us." Her smile faded slightly at the memory, but she quickly shook it off. "I'm glad you're friends with Blondie."
"Friends," Kai echoed, voice going awkward. "Sure. Sexy Bexy is a great friend."
She arched an eyebrow but let it go, instead changing the subject. "Let's get beignets. I practically lived on them when I was pregnant."
"Hmm, sounds delicious," Kai replied, still not quite meeting her eye.
They stopped near a violinist playing a lively tune. The girls squealed and clapped their hands. Elizabeth dropped a few bills into the case, nodding her thanks as the woman finished with a dramatic flourish.
