Elizabeth lay curled against Klaus, her head resting on his bare chest. Morning sunlight filtered softly through the curtains. Klaus ran his fingers lazily through her hair.

Her voice broke the silence.

"So... what's the deal with Lucien?"

Klaus arched a brow.

"Elijah spilled the tea," she added. "Apparently Lucien has every reason to hate you—but was acting all buddy-buddy last time I saw him."

Klaus sighed. "My memory of Lucien goes back to a time when our family was... happy. As happy as vampires hiding in plain sight could be. We were in Marseille, under the rule of the Count's arrogant son, Tristan, and his equally spoiled sister, Lady Aurora."

Elizabeth's eyes narrowed. "Aurora. That the girl you mentioned before?" She sat up slightly. "Did you guys date or something?"

Klaus studied her face. "Is this one of those questions that ends with you throwing books at my head?"

"What? No!" she protested.

He gave her a knowing look. "Sweetheart, you're not exactly subtle when you're jealous. And I'd prefer to avoid another morning injury."

She huffed. "Well, duh, you're mine. And it's not like a book could hurt you anyway, you big immortal Viking." Her hand moved to his jaw, gripping his chin. "But seriously... do I have a reason to be jealous?"

Klaus sighed, voice soft. "Any feelings I had for Aurora died centuries ago. I loved her once, yes. A thousand years ago. But now? There's only you, Elizabeth. Not her, not Camille, no one else."

She didn't look convinced. "Sometimes I feel like I don't deserve love. My dad messed me up. I'm the one-night stand girl, not the one you choose. And, honestly, that's how we started too."

"You know," Klaus said, "after that night, I went back to the Grill the next morning. Hoping I'd see you again. I didn't know if I wanted to kiss you or kill you, but I needed to see you. Then a month later, you show up—carrying my children. It felt like fate."

She blinked. "Really? I didn't think about you again until the witches told me I was pregnant. I was too busy panicking."

"Ouch," Klaus said, mock wounded. He cradled her face in his hands. "Still... I chose you. And I'll keep choosing you, even if we're no longer lovers someday. You're my family, always."

"Promise?" she whispered.

"I promise you everything you desire, love."

She kissed him softly. "Then I promise I'll always choose you, too."

As his lips trailed down her neck, she murmured, "Now... tell me more about Lucien."

Klaus groaned. "You never let anything go, do you?"
