THEY WERE IN THE MYSTIC GRILL. The siblings had taken Elena there after knocking her out, and Kai had tied her to a chair using vervain-laced ropes. Elizabeth figured it was karma—her boyfriend had done the same thing to her just hours ago.

The Mystic Grill was empty now. Kai had slaughtered the manager, albeit unintentionally, after losing control of his magic. Elizabeth had taken care of the late-night server—drained him dry, actually. He had been... delicious. There was nothing like drinking straight from the vein. It always made her feel alive again.

Now, Kai was cooking. Elizabeth, ever the multitasker, stirred blood into a cup of strong espresso. One of her favorite creations. But she was picky—it had to be black, bitter, and AB+. Anything else was a waste.

Across the room, Elena stirred. Her head rolled to one side. Groggy. Disoriented. Alive.

Kai was talking as if she weren't even there.

"We never went out to dinner when I was a kid," he said to Elizabeth, flipping something in a skillet. "So, I always had this weird fascination with chefs and fine dining. Dad actually let me cook. Taught me to measure by eye, season by taste—all that old-school stuff. But restaurants now? They're just clocks. Fries go in, you push a button, it dings, and boom. No guesswork. No soul."

"Lucky," Elizabeth muttered. "Dad never let me near the stove. I died like three times from food poisoning in the prison world. Thought I was just passing out, until I shot myself in the head one day and came back a few hours later. That's when I figured it out—I'd been dying. Repeatedly."

"Oh yeah," Kai said with a laugh. "Because you burned the house down trying to make an omelet. That's why we moved to Portland."

"I was ten, Kai. No one left food for me, and I was starving. You were off doing some school project. Everyone else was on a weekend trip, remember?"

Kai chuckled. "I remember Dad's face more than anything. Guy looked like you'd torched the family grimoires. Didn't even ask if you were okay."

Elena groaned, trying to sit up. The vervain burned against her skin, keeping her weak.

"Why am I here?" she croaked.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Wow. That's what you lead with? You're literally tied to a chair, and you're asking why? What is that—your go-to? Boring them into letting you go?"

"Technically," Kai said cheerfully, plating his dish, "I spent eighteen years in empty restaurants. So this is kind of a full-circle moment. Culinary closure."

"And you've gotten so much better," Elizabeth added, moaning around a bite. "I can actually taste the omelet. It would suck if, being technically dead, everything but blood tasted like dirt."
