Elizabeth was sprawled on the floor of the shack, laid out on a blanket while Eve knelt in front of her, guiding her through breathing exercises. Hayley lounged in a chair nearby, sipping tea, trying not to laugh at the sheer misery on Elizabeth's face.

"That's it," Eve said with a gentle smile. "Inhale... and release."

Elizabeth exhaled sharply. "I've been inhaling and releasing for ten minutes. How the hell am I supposed to do this for hours while pushing out two babies?"

The anxiety was crawling up her throat. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that her body was actually going to do this—twice. At once. And people chose to do this more than once? Her mother had, and Elizabeth was absolutely certain she would not be following in her footsteps. This was a one-time deal.

Hayley smirked. "So I guess that's a no on the epidural, huh? Eve, you sure she can't do this in, I don't know, a hospital? You know, with drugs. And doctors. And drugs?"

Elizabeth nodded emphatically. "I love drugs. Never turning those down. Although I might punch the doctor in the face if he keeps yelling at me to push. But I don't care. Still getting the doctor. And the drugs."
No way was she having these kids in the middle of the muddy bayou like some backwoods horror story. Not without painkillers. Not with these miracle devil spawns.

Eve chuckled. "Honey, werewolves have been giving birth out here long before you were born. You'll be fine."

Elizabeth made a face. "Yeah, not helping. I'm not a werewolf, remember? I'm a siphoner, currently incubating a brand-new hybrid species inside me. What if they're born with fangs? Am I supposed to feed them blood instead of milk? What do I even do after I pop them out? I don't know how to be a mother," she added, her voice dipping into something more vulnerable.

Eve reached for her hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Elizabeth had to resist the instinctive pull to siphon—it was always there, just under the surface. But Eve had been kind, the way Elizabeth had always wished her own mother had been. She owed her the effort.

"When the time comes," Eve said gently, "you'll know what to do."

Elizabeth gave her a sad smile. "Sorry, Vee, but I don't really believe in the whole 'motherly instincts' thing. My mom was terrified of me. She treated me like I was contagious. She even made my brother and I eat on separate plates from our siblings because she thought we'd infect them or something. Completely ridiculous."

Eve's smile didn't waver. "Well, I believe in you. I know you'll be a good mother."

"We both do," Hayley added, getting up from her chair and settling next to Elizabeth on the floor.

Elizabeth sighed. "Well... I guess we'll see." Then she straightened up and added with faux confidence, "I am excellent at everything. I'm sure I'll be exceptional at this too."
