Kai had siphoned the compulsion out of Elizabeth. They'd holed up in a cheap hotel after that—Elizabeth had compelled them a room, prioritizing privacy over luxury. They needed somewhere quiet to cast locator spells, away from prying eyes.
Elizabeth wanted to remove the dagger from Klaus, to wake him, but she didn't even know where they had hidden his body. She couldn't risk getting caught and compelled again if Elijah or someone else found her. And besides, there was something—someone—more important.
Kolina.
Her daughter was her first priority. If Dahlia hadn't found her yet, it was only a matter of time. They had to move fast.
Klaus would come next. She would find a way to bring him back. He had to be part of the twins' lives—there was no question in her mind about that.
Elizabeth had grown up wishing for a father who loved her. Not that she wanted Joshua's love now—not after everything he'd done—but she had dreamed of being enough for him once. She'd been denied that dream. She wouldn't deny her daughters the same.
Klaus wasn't perfect. He was dangerous, volatile, and at times terrifying. But he loved them. Fiercely. More than his own life. She could see it in the way he looked at them. For a narcissist like Klaus, that kind of love meant something.
He wasn't her father. He didn't put power or legacy first. He put them first.
And it would be cruel to take that from them. She wouldn't. She couldn't.
"Did you find her?" Elizabeth asked, her voice tight with desperation as she rocked a fussy Kayla in her arms.
Kayla was restless—more than usual. She could feel it. Her sister wasn't there, and that unsettled her. They were twins, after all. There was a bond between them Elizabeth couldn't explain.
Kai shook his head, frowning. "No... I'm sorry. Something's blocking the locator spell. I can feel her in the bayou, but I can't pinpoint her location. And they're moving."
"We have to find her!" Elizabeth's voice cracked, panic slipping into her tone.
Kai exhaled, surprisingly gentle. "I know, sissy. I'm trying. Don't worry—I'm mega-powerful. I'll find the little munchkin."
Elizabeth clutched Kayla tighter, her breathing growing ragged.
"I feel like I'm going to explode!" she snapped. The air in the room shifted, tense. The grimoire Kai had been holding snapped shut on its own. A vase on the shelf shattered into pieces.
Elizabeth flinched.
Her magic had always been volatile when she was emotional. She hated that. Her father had hated it, too—used it as proof she was unfit to hold power. Proof that she was an abomination.
