There was a line of werewolves stretching across the bayou.

Dozens of them—some older, some barely more than kids—stood scattered near the encampment, watching the house like it was sacred ground. On the porch, Hayley sipped tea beside Elizabeth, Eva lounging nearby with a raised brow.

They weren't subtle. They weren't blending in. And they weren't leaving.

Elizabeth eyed them warily. "This isn't some bloody kingdom," she muttered. "If I were a werewolf, I'd try settling somewhere that doesn't actively hate me."

"You've gotta be kidding me," Hayley added, lifting her cup to her lips. "What is going on? Who are these people? Why are they standing out here all weird and lurky?"

"It's definitely creepy," Elizabeth said, arms crossed over her belly. "Are they compelled or something? Because I wouldn't line up to live in a mosquito-infested swamp unless I had a death wish."

Eva laughed, shaking her head. "No, Elizabeth. Werewolves can't be compelled. Same as witches. These wolves came from all over. Every pack."

Elizabeth blinked. "Why? To see me? Or is it the devil spawn cooking in my stomach?"

Hayley snorted. "To see babies that aren't even born yet?"

Elizabeth placed a hand on her swollen stomach, glancing around. "Why would a bunch of mutts want to meet my little monsters?"

The door creaked open behind them, and out stepped Oliver—public enemy number one on Elizabeth's rapidly growing blacklist. Her jaw tensed at the sight of him.

Great. Just what she needed.

"They're not here for your witch friend's babies," Oliver said flatly, eyeing Elizabeth. "They're here to see you, Hayley. Even if you're a hybrid, your parents meant something to these packs. Maybe they think you're some long-lost werewolf messiah."

Hayley groaned. "Great. No pressure or anything."

Elizabeth bumped her shoulder playfully. "I think it's kinda cool, Hayls. You've got actual worshippers. Make them your minions! Be a real queen—like ancient times. I can be your sarcastic, powerful siphoner best friend. We'll rule the swamp. Add in my two little devils and it's a whole chaotic dynasty."

Hayley laughed, but at Oliver's disapproving look, her tone sobered. "No one is enslaving anyone, Lizzie. And I'm not a queen."

Elizabeth pouted. "You're such a buzzkill."

But Hayley muttered under her breath, "I like the last part."

Elizabeth grinned. "I knew there was a reason we were friends."
