A few minutes after Klaus left, Kai suddenly gasped, as if the death that had just silenced him moments ago was nothing more than a cruel hallucination. Kayla's soft cries echoed in the background, but Elizabeth was frozen in confusion. How was this possible? One moment her brother was dead, and now—he was alive again. Was she losing her mind?

"Kai—how?" Elizabeth asked, wiping tears from her face, voice barely steady. She was certain he was gone. How could this be real?

Kai winced as he touched the bloodied wound on his neck. "Damn, that hurt."

Without hesitation, Elizabeth threw her arms around him, clutching him tightly—afraid he might vanish like a dream at any moment. But he hugged her back, warm and real.

"How is this possible?" she whispered.

"Protection spell. The one you taught me," Kai answered simply, drinking from a cup of her blood to heal his wound.

Elizabeth's mind flickered back to the spell she had learned after Celeste had used it on herself, shortly before Davina killed Celeste. Elizabeth used it on herself often—confidence in magic only went so far, and it was better to be safe than dead. Recently, she had been casting it almost daily on Rebekah, now human—well, a witch, but an inept one.

"Klaus... Santa Klaus," Kai said with a wry smile, "entered my mind. Something about damaged minds being easier to enter."

Elizabeth's heart sank. "So this was his plan all along?"

She glanced sadly at Kayla, who was still crying quietly. "Everything he said to me... to Kayla... it was all part of a plan?"

Kai nodded, grinning. Elizabeth sighed in exasperation. "That smart bastard."

She hoped with all her heart that the plan worked. If Klaus had gone to such lengths, said such cruel things for nothing... she would find a way to kill him herself. But right now, she didn't have the energy for anger—only for hope. Hope that his twisted plan would bring her daughter back.

Kai laughed softly. "Yep. That naughty doggie is smarter than we gave him credit for. Anyway..." His eyes drifted toward Elijah's motionless body not far away. "We gotta wake up the big bro in the suit before I spill the full plan. That's part one of Klaus's plan, by the way."

Elizabeth carefully turned Kayla away, still strapped into her car seat on the courtyard table. She didn't want the baby to witness the gruesome scene unfolding around them—the night had already been traumatizing enough.

She knelt beside Elijah's body, found a knife in the kitchen, and cut open his chest. Sliding her hand inside, she withdrew the blade. Elijah gasped sharply, eyes snapping open wide.
