Elizabeth sat curled in a rocking chair in the nursery, the soft creak of the wood the only sound besides her pen scratching across paper. She was writing slowly, carefully, the letter forming more like a conversation than a confession. Around her, the nursery glowed with a soft golden light.

Klaus stood in the doorway, arms crossed, eyes glinting with mischief.

"Writing a love letter to one of your many admirers?" he teased, lips quirking. "Who's the lucky one this time? Elijah? Jackson? One of your werewolf friends?"

Elizabeth rolled her eyes without looking up. "Eli and Jacky are Hayley's boyfriends. And for your information, I believe in best friend code: chicks before dicks."

A faint smile tugged at her lips as she added, "Besides, Elijah already rejected me. He literally tore my heart out." She gave a dramatic pout, half-mocking, half-hurt.

"My brother is a fool," Klaus said smoothly, though his eyes lingered on her longer than he meant them to. Then, with mock horror, he added, "Don't tell me it's me?"

"You wish," she shot back with a smirk.

Suddenly, Elizabeth gasped and shifted in her seat, clutching her belly. "Oh—someone's kicking again."

Klaus moved forward instinctively. "How are our littlest wolves doing?" he asked, his voice softening as he approached. "And the little siphoner—does she need a dose of magic?"

Elizabeth shook her head. "Nope. I think she's good... that was probably baby Z. Do you want to feel?" She rubbed the swell of her stomach, eyes flicking up to him, vulnerable for a moment. "You used to, all the time..."

Before their fight about the Merge, he had. Back when things had been easier—closer. Now there was distance between them, like a ghost haunting every shared silence.

Klaus hesitated.

"Come on," Elizabeth coaxed, her voice gentle.

Tentatively, he stepped forward and placed his hand on her belly. Almost instantly, a kick nudged against his palm. He blinked, startled.

Elizabeth laughed, bright and breathless. "You felt that?"

Klaus chuckled softly, eyes lighting up. "They're strong."

For a moment, everything felt okay again—until he pulled away, suddenly awkward.

"Well," he said abruptly, "I'll leave you to your secret letter, then."

He turned before she could stop him. Elizabeth smiled to herself, then turned her gaze back to the letter in her lap.

Dear Little Devils,
I still haven't chosen names for you—though I know I want one of you to be named after my brother. He would've loved you both if he were alive.
So for now, 'little devils' will have to do.
Your daddy asked if I was writing a love letter. Funny thing is, maybe I am. Not the mushy kind that makes me want to stab someone—okay, sometimes I still want to stab someone—but the real kind.
My mother hated me once she found out what I was. Before that, she loved me. And just like that, the love vanished. Like I'd never mattered at all.
But you? I promise you will never feel like that. Ever.
