"Nightfall?" I questioned.
Klaus sighed, pushing himself off the wall. He walked towards me, playing with our daughter, silent in my arms.
"Yes, love. I wish it were more time."
"So, Dahlia gave you a deadline to hand over our daughter, and you're what, gonna do it?"
He smirked, not uttering a word.
"You better be saying hell no."
He took the baby out of my arms, sitting her in the crib. She immediately took notice of the toys, playing with them whilst he grabbed my hand, taking me over to the couch and sitting us down.
"You know.." Klaus started.
"You broke my heart, the day you left." He continued.
"After centuries of being deeply in love, you left like it was nothing."
"Like you did with my son and I? You left Marcel to fend for himself when Mikael came. You left me.." I reminded him.
"But I came back.."
"After a year! And I still foolishly slept with you."
"You say that as if you regret our daughter."
"I don't regret anything. I love her, I love you; I have to look out for her more than anyone else, even myself."
"I completely understand, love. We have the same goal, different strategies, however."
I smiled at the hybrid.
He contemplated a question
before asking."I guess, in a way, what I'm asking is.. if you're willing, I'd like to give us another chance."
I stared at him.
"Think about it. Our daughter's parents united, now, more than ever. No one would even dare go against us."
"Except Dahlia."
He chuckled, dropping his head and taking my hand.
"Do not worry about the old witch. Death is waiting for her." He smirked.
"So what do you say? Would you like to hold a united front against our daughter's enemies while enjoying mind blowing sex?"
My smile dropped as he ruined the moment. I looked at my baby who was now asleep, cuddling the teddy bear in her arms.
"I'm down, Klaus."
He smiled, soon after running off to play king somewhere.
I went down the hall to the bathroom, emptying my bladder before it did itself. As I washed my hands, I noticed the light bags under my eyes probably from dealing with these idiots.
Making my way down the hall, my thumb tapped the button, calling Elijah. The call didn't go through which put the wolves on higher alert.
I followed their stare to the green vines creeping inside the walls of the building. The vines then bloomed with dahlias all over.
The wolves ran out, going to investigate the problem while I rushed to Ella's room.
I shushed the fussy baby, standing in the middle of the room, feeling intense worry flood my body as my phone call to Klaus failed.
The sound of a woman's voice whistling a tune echoed off the walls. I recognized the tune as the one Dahlia hummed to Freya when she was a child.
My head slowly turned to see Dahlia stop just outside the doorway. I glared at her, clutching Ella close to my chest as Dahlia finally looked down at Ella, gasping.
"What a beauty! Hello, my child."
She moved to walk into the room, but stopped when she noticed the line of sand at the doorway.
"I was hoping for a more intimate chat, though I sense by entering you would have me at a considerable disadvantage." She said then frowned.
"Why don't you come on in? I would love to show you some hybrid hospitality." I growled.
"I only wanted to see the little one who has been promised to me. Won't be long now. Surely you've noticed the spell protecting you is growing weaker."
"I never promised her to you. It was Esther so seems like the deal is off."
"My point exactly. You have no part in this. Hand over the child; I'm sure we can keep things civilized."
"Please.. do I look dumb? You've definitely lost your mind and if you lay a finger on her, I swear I will make you suffer in ways you can't imagine. God, I hate this family.." I threatened, scoffing.
Dahlia laughed.
"Mia, darling. I have no quarrel with you. Esther made this bargain long ago. It's most unfortunate you've been dragged into it."
"You talk like you don't have a choice, but this is your doing. It's your decision to kill innocents in an effort to get my daughter."
"Oh, sweet Mia.. Do you not remember your thrashing days with Niklaus? Your murdering of innocents? Surely, your little wolfie eyes will tell it all. When I give my word, I keep it, and I expect others to do the same. Esther and I made a bargain a long time ago, and so, you see, that child is rightfully mine. The only question that you need ask is would you deny me, knowing that it would mean your death?"
"You're not taking her." I angrily told her.
"You're frightened for your child. I can assure you, anything that Freya may have told you about our life together, well, she always had a flair for the dramatic."
"It seems to run in the family."
"Well, then of course, most of my troubles with Freya stemmed from the fact that I came for her so late in life. She had such a strong memory of the family that I took her from, but Ella, is it? She is still young. She won't cling to the memory of you or cry for you in her sleep. You can take comfort in the fact that, for her, it will be as if you never existed."
I growled, feeling my eyes glowing. Dahlia stood, unfazed; tilting her head as Ella cried.
"You've upset the child. Pity. You ought not to waste your last hours with her this way. You should spend your time saying your farewells. Nightfall tomorrow will come all too soon. Good-bye for now, little one."
