What Is and What Should Never Be (3)

Dean's POV

I never thought I'd have the chance to wake up in my childhood home again, never thought I would see pictures of Sam and I living a happy normal life. When my eyes opened from the best sleep I ever had, I realized that I was still in the world that I thought I had dreamt.

Even though I wanted to explore this world and continue to live it, I knew that there was something wrong about this.

Sitting up from the couch, rubbing the tiredness out of my eyes, I dialed Sam only to get his voicemail. I let out a sigh and hung up, knowing that I would have to do a little research myself.

I went to the local college, meeting up with a very confused professor.

"Well, I don't think I've seen you in my class before." He noted, looking me up and down.

"You kiddin' me?" I smiled. "I love your lectures. You . . . You make learning fun." I pointed, waving my finger at him.

The professor let out a laugh, shaking his head not really believing a word I said. "So. What can I do for you?" He asked.

I shoved my hands into my leather jacket. "What can you tell me about Djinns?"

"Well," He started pulling out a couple of books from his desk and opening them to a certain page, "a lot of Muslims believed the Djinn are very real. And they're mentioned in the Koran-"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." I nodded, cutting him off. "I know. Get to the wish part."

His brows scrunched up in confusion. "What about it?"

"Do you think they could really do it?" I asked, looking down at the various pictures of djinn. They mostly looked harmless, a few drawn like cartoon genies, but I knew better.

"Um . . ." He shifted awkwardly. "Uh, no. No, I don't think they can 'really do it'." He eyed me with curiosity. "You understand these are mythic creatures?"

I looked up from the books, watching as he stared at me as if I was a maniac. "I know. I-I-I know. I know." I let out an awkward laugh. "But uh . . . I mean in the stories." I nodded. "You know, say you had a wish, uh. But you never even said it out loud. Like that, uh . . . that a loved one never died. Or that, uh, something awful never happened."

The professor thought momentarily before nodding. "Supposedly, yes. I mean they have godlike power. They can alter reality however they want. Past. Present. Future."

I ran a hand over my jaw in thought.

The djinn just gave away a wish without anything in return? What was he getting out of it?

"Why would the Djinn do it?" I questioned out loud. "What, self-defense? Or maybe it's not really evil."

As I spoke my thoughts, I had forgotten that I wasn't with Sammy or Kylie but with a professor who thought these things were myths.

"Son?"

"Hm?" I hummed, still deep in thought.

"You been drinking?"

I couldn't help the humorous smile that formed on my face. "Everybody keeps asking me that. But uh . . . No."

After leaving the college, I went straight to my car wondering if maybe there was something left of my other life hidden inside her.

I opened the trunk surprised to find it pretty much empty except for a few old magazines, a couple of paper cups, and a greased up rag. There were not guns or knives, no weapons of any kind.
