CHAPTER 38: UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY
The next morning I spent longer than ever on my appearance. I guess in my subconscious Marc was becoming a battleground between me and Stacie which caused me to feel the need to look my best at all occasions. Securing my hair into a casual yet stylish messy bun, I paired winged eyeliner and neutral lipgloss which black leather-look skinny jeans and an ivory eyelet lace top. Surveying myself in the mirror I was satisfied. I could never elude glamour like Stacie but I hardly looked shabby either.
Grabbing my sunglasses and purse from the window seat I responded to Stacie’s horn by waving through the window and indicating I’d be down any second. With a final yell to my mom I headed out, swinging a house key from one finger.
Outside it was warm already, hot enough for Stacie to have her roof down comfortably. From behind the wheel she smiled sheepishly. The last time we’d talked she’d basically told me I couldn’t date Marc and I’d gone ahead and done it anyway. Some friend I was.
‘Hey.’ I said, returning her smile with a grin of my own. I wanted her to know that I was ready for negotiation and didn’t want war.
‘Hi babe,’ she flicked a loose golden curl over one shoulder. ‘Before we set off I wanted to give you this.’
She handed me a turquoise blue jewellery box adorned with a white satin ribbon.
I looked at her in confusion, ‘what's this?’
‘Just a I’m-sorry-I-was-such-a-jerk present.’ She removed her movie star sunglasses and surveyed me with her amber eyes. ‘Because I really am sorry for being such a bitch.’
It was only upon relooking at the box I noted the scripture of the company. ‘Oh my god Stacie, you can’t just buy me Tiffany jewellery!’ I was shocked; I didn’t even own anything remotely this expensive.
But she brushed me off, ‘sure I can, I feel really bad okay.’
‘Well, thank you.’ I half whispered. Pulling undone the ribbon I opened the box. Inside the felt pouch was a thin, rose gold bracelet. The chain was so delicate I was sure I could have snapped it in two. It wound through my fingers until I noticed the small infinity symbol adorned in the centre. ‘Oh my... this is beautiful Stace.’ I felt guilty I hadn’t gotten her a present now. Was this common practise? When you mouth off at a friend you buy them expensive jewellery?
‘I’m glad you like it.’ she pouted shyly, ‘I’ll do it up for you if you want?’
I let her wrap the chain around my wrist and secure it tightly. The rose gold caught the sunlight and twinkled mischievously. I was gobsmacked, it was stunning.
For the most part of the journey Stacie was silent. The roads were fairly busy at this time and I imagined she wanted to concentrate on which lane she needed to be in. Arriving at the mall, she pulled into a parking spot and exited the car. With a flick of her keys she raised the roof and clicked the locks.
