CHAPTER 12: DRESSES AND DIAMONDS
By the time I had left Spanish and entered trig I was in full scale panic 101 mode. Homecoming dance: the ‘welcome back’ party that all the cool kids would be going to. A chance to show off a pretty dress and a glamorous hairstyle, whilst parading around on the arm of some sultry male.
So all in all, something I had never experienced.
Kaylee Bennett the ice bitch would have eaten anybody alive that dared to ask me to a school dance so naturally I had never bothered going. Unfortunately somehow I didn’t feel I would get away as easily at this school.
But how the hell was I going to find someone stupid enough to take me to homecoming?
‘Are you okay?’ Rochelle looked concerned as I tapped my foot up and down on the tiled floor.
I tried my best to give her a yes I'm fine look, but when she looked more scared than reassured I gave in.
‘Can I ask you something?’ I blurted out.
‘Sure,’ she breathed, her light hair flitting in the breeze from the fan overhead.
‘Who are you going to homecoming with?’
She giggled and flushed slightly. ‘Matt Bell asked me...’
I gawped, ‘as in the Matt Bell? The quarterback?’
She flushed, ‘yeah, he asked me at the beach party. Who are you going with?’
‘Well that's the thing, I don't have anyone...’
She pouted, ‘you mean Marc hasn’t asked you?’
w-what? ‘No, why?’ I say quickly.
She rolls her eyes, ‘because he thinks you’re cute, obviously!’
It was my turn to flush. Or turn beetroot red as some people call it.
‘No he doesn’t,’ I mumble, my ploy to look like a cool girl, well educated on the ways of males flies out the window.
‘Yes he does,’ she teases!
I bury my head in my hands whilst she giggles at my expense.

As we sat down at the lunch table Rochelle gave me a knowing look. Marc and the boys weren’t here yet but I still couldn’t escape homecoming. Niki and Caz were having a heated debate about whether a cocktail dress was formal enough and Mia wash gushing about her date’s gift to her.
Finally the guys eventually showed. Marc was wearing a varsity jacket, which was slung over one shoulder. The muscles in his arms rippled slightly as he walked – hey, a girl can dream right?
When he spotted me, he leant down and flicked my ear.
Confused I turned to look up at him, ‘what are you doing?’
‘Dunno,’ he shrugged, ‘anyway I've been meaning to ask you-‘ I broke eye contact and noticed Rochelle giggling with Stacie in a corner, ‘-did you want to come to homecoming with me?’
He sounded very sure of himself as a playful smirk slipped over his lips.
‘Umm,’ I pretended to think about it. ‘Yeah alright then.’ I aimed for nonchalant but ended up sounding out of breath. This only caused his smirk to widen.
‘Wondrous, make sure you look cute babe.’
‘I always look cute.’ I said with a grin.
‘Sure sure.’ He said, as I hit him in the arm.
Rolling her eyes Niki turned to me, ‘Stacie and I are hitting up the mall to look for dresses later. You wanna come?’
‘Oh please.’ I said, frankly I needed advice. I had no idea what someone would wear to a homecoming dance.

Four hours later I was sat in Stacie's gorgeous BMW as we purred away from the parking lot. Word had already gotten round that the running back; Marc Woods had asked the cute new girl in junior year to homecoming. Part of me felt like I wanted to cover my face with embarrassment, the other part felt like Kendall Jenner. Albeit a slightly less hot version of Kendall Jenner.
‘So,’ Niki said, breaking my thoughts, ‘where are we going to get dresses from? We have to look fabulous!’
Stacie thought about it, ‘there’s always Sherri Hill? They do stunning dresses!’
‘Yeah let’s look there first, I picked up some shoes last week, but I can always get new ones...’ Niki grinned a little.
‘Cute! Where are they from?’
‘Jimmy Choo, they’re like nude stilettos.’
I zoned out as Niki and Stacie chatted about shoes and fashion. I’d never heard of Sherri Hill but I did know that Jimmy Choo shoes were ridiculously expensive. Christ, what had I gotten myself into?
When we arrived at the mall, we headed straight to the top floor. Glasshouse shopping mall is known for having a huge selection of designer shops excusive to the highest floor. Fabulous, I grumbled, with $200 in my purse I was screwed.
As the escalator ascended, I began to feel more and more panicky. Both these girls were crazy rich, with platinum credit cards dangling between their fingers. When I’d thought about getting a dress for homecoming, I was more Forever 21 than Fiorelli.
Sherri Hill dresses turned out to be a beautiful selection of prom dresses hidden away in a little boutique. There was no denying how gorgeous they were... that was until I almost toppled over upon realising the prices.
How anyone could justify spending $1000 on a dress they would wear once I didn’t know. But Stacie and Niki seemed to spend money like it was water. Both girls clattered around in borrowed heels trying on various dresses and hollering at me to do the same.
Hmm... What harm could trying a dress on do? I wouldn’t have to actually buy it...
A few minutes later I stepped out of the changing room dressed in the most beautiful dress I’d ever laid eyes on. It was heavy, mostly nude colours and covered with thousands, if not millions of sequins. The thin spaghetti straps pulled it tightly over my shoulders creating an illusion of a fuller figure.
‘Well fuck me darling, you look beautiful.’ Niki said with an amusing southern accent.
I was just about to explode with laughter when I saw something that made my blood run cold. Standing in the door way to the shop looking in on the scene was a girl I’d hoped to never have to see again. Her black hair was long, loose and straight, dark eyes glinting.
Kaylee Bennet the Ice Bitch raised one eyebrow as she surveyed the three girls in front of her.
