CHAPTER 11: THE MORNING AFTER

The sharp sound of an alarm blaring shocked me awake. Groaning, I reached out my hand to the left but only came into contact with a smooth surface, no alarm clock. Confused I opened my eyes, the bright Californian sun causing momentary shadows to flit across the surface.

'What?' I mumbled out loud. The blaring had stopped now and it was slowly dawning on me that this wasn't my room.

'I know it just cannot be morning,' a groggy yet feminine voice from my immediate left.

My eyes flew open and I sat up in shock, causing waves of aching pain to flow through my head. My heart beating at twice its normal pace I looked to the left. Inhaling deeply I recognised the mass of golden curls and perfect tan skin lying next to me. Stacie. She had last night's mascara spread under her lashes, forming bruised shadows, but still managed to look beautiful.

'Shit,' I moaned, 'my heads on fire!'

'It's called a hangover love,' she mumbled into the pillow.

'You need to get up, we have an hour until school!' I squeaked.

She giggled but finally opened her eyes, shading the lids with a hand. 'Jesus Bex you look like crap!'

'Thanks...' I muttered and clamoured out of the bed, managing to ignore the stabbing pains near the front of my head. In the bathroom, I ran a tap and gulped some water before looking in the mirror. Good god, I really did look like crap! Mascara had run giving me that popular panda look as seen on prostitutes, but my foundation was now so patchy I looked diseased. Running my hand in the warm water I splashed it on my face before helping myself to some MAC cleanse off oil to remove the rest of my makeup.

Thankfully I had had the good sense to change out of my bikini and shorts last night and I was currently glad in my own pyjamas from home. Jogging back into her room (Stacie had rolled over again) I pulled some fresh clothes and my cosmetics bag from the side and proceeded to lock the bathroom door. Pulling on my underwear I pondered on my outfit, settling on a black and white Aztec print tee and some white jean shorts. I applied moisturiser to my face and began working on concealing those under eye circles.

When I was finally done I ran a brush through my hair picking out a few leaves as I went.

'Stace you need to get up!' I said to her, giggling slightly at the absurdity of the situation.

'Okay, okay fine,' she grumbled pulling herself into a sitting position. Sliding her legs out of bed I watched as she quickly ran into the bathroom, showered and expertly applied some makeup. After changing into a floral playsuit and some Steve Madden sandals she grinned at me.

'Ready?'

'Sure!' I said just as my phone beeped. Pulling it out of my pocket it displayed two new messages.

One was from my mother, sent at eleven forty six last night, asking me how my evening was going. I quickly typed a reply not wanting to worry her that I was dead or kidnapped or something.

The second was from an unknown number. It read as follows:

Last night was fun right? Shame we didn't finish what we started though...

My blood ran cold. I could barely remember last night but bits and pieces stood clear. Namely running along the beach, near tears away from Jasper. To be honest he creeped me out a little and I would rather stay as far away from him as possible.

'Bex?' Stacie queried resting her manicured hand on the door. 'You okay?'

'Sure,' I mumbled, 'come on we're going to be late.'

Pulling up at school in Stacie's BMW was like entering a movie scene. People just paused and watched us go past. I managed to hold my head high with a light smile on my face even though I wanted the ground to swallow me whole. I was still convinced that someone would work out that I was a fake and pull me up on it. Then I'd be relegated to the low lying ranks of insignificance.

Oh pull yourself together.

When we reached the group everybody was a mix of buzzing about last night and nursing hangovers. I scanned around for jasper and spotted him with his back to me, talking to Ella Woods. Ella was Marc's twin sister and every bit as tall and gorgeous. Her sheet of black hair fell in one glossy sweep to her butt, and her never ending legs were clad in pale denim.

Then I spotted Marc, he was with a couple of sophomore girls from the cheer squad. Some strangely foreign feeling built up inside me and I had the urge to swat them away from him.

When he spotted me he came over, 'so you survived last night then?' he winked, making me swoon a little.

'Just about,' I said lightly, 'how about you?'

'I'm a little worse for wear, but I think I'll make it.'

Oh stop smiling at me like that, I'm melting.

'Oh I was meaning to ask you-'

'Marc!' someone called and he wheeled around.

Caz stood facing us, her clouds of blonde hair flitting in the breeze.

He gave me an apologetic look and stumbled off after her. Eurgh! It was like she had some charmed spell over him. I glowered a little.

'Oh and Bex?' she smiled at me, but there was a slight glint in her eye. 'You know is Friday is the homecoming dance right?'

'Um no...' my heart rate is increasing. Oh crap crap crap I will never get a date for this! I've never so much been to junior prom because no one would invite me.

'Well it is. I'm only telling you because I'm head of the student committee so, you might want to think about a date and a dress.' She grinned, 'come on Marc, see you around Bex.'

I just gawped.

Well, there's the latest flaw in the plan Bex...
