CHAPTER 33: IS THIS EVEN REALITY?!
All I knew was I really wanted to get drunk tonight. Thankfully I’d had the good sense to sweep on some waterproof makeup before I started the heavy stuff. But now, it was fast approaching seven o’clock and I lay across the couch giggling maniacally at anything anyone said. The party was due to start at about seven thirtyish but no one really seemed in the mood to move.
Eventually Stacie pulled herself into a sitting position, high enough to glance out the three storey high window.
‘Oh my god, the boys are here!’ she shrieked, jumping to her feet. ‘People are starting to arrive, we need to head down!’
As though we served her beck and call, the whole troop paraded down the stairs (thankfully not falling, which was entirely possible,) and out through a very high tech kitchen area into the garden area.
I’d never been at this end of Stacie’s house before but it was equally beautiful as the former half. Behind sliding glass doors that covered the entire south wall was a large open space decking area with patio chairs and outdoor sofas. Beyond this slightly sunk into the ground was a colossal swimming pool illuminating by slowly lights, turning the lapping water into a rainbow. Strung around countless trees that edged this area were thousands of twinkling fairy lights, illuminating the pathways and grass like an ethereal spell. Music pounded from loud speakers situated at one end of the pool, from the other guests approached.
I first saw a group of girls who I recognized from the cheer squad. I guess they hadn’t quite made Stacie’s cut on who should be allowed to prelash with her. For some reason this tickled me, what the hell was I doing here?
Then they came, armed with crates of beer and bottles of vodka. The boys. Matt, Jasper, Marc and Jeremy led the pack with many others appearing behind.
Niki turned to me, a fully fledged grin on her face. ‘Oh let’s get this party started!’ and with that she sashayed up to Jasper taking the red cups out of his hands.
The girls began giggling and dancing, and were soon joined by the guys. By now my alcohol was wearing slightly thin. I didn’t feel quite as paralytic as I’d intended. How else was I supposed to forget the perfect couple? Mr and Mrs got-it-all. So I headed over to where the drink was being kept. A couple of swigs of vodka later and I could feel the back of my throat burning. That's enough of that then.
‘Thought I might find you here.’ A male voice purred from over my shoulder.
‘Jasper, hey.’ I sighed, why did I still hope it had been someone else? ‘And what is that supposed to mean! I'm not an alcoholic!’ I poked his chest indignantly.
