CHAPTER 39: SECRETS & LIES

When our food arrived I felt far too sick to even contemplate eating it. Frankly the once delectable grilled chicken flatbread was just not what I needed. Since Stacie’s little outburst, all I could think about was Marc. Was he cheating on me with some girl right now? Was it Carly, the blonde bimbo from the other night?

Stacie looked at me nervously, ‘I’m sorry,’ she apologised for the umpteenth time, ‘I really didn’t know that no one had told you.’

‘Its fine Stace,’ I replied in a flat voice. I began picking at the corner of my chicken, ‘um do you mind me asking who it was? That he cheated on you, with?’

A dark cloud passed over her face. ‘A girl called Vera from Malibu High. Apparently,’ she scoffed, ‘she threw herself at him. Well I’ll tell you something for nothing, that's not the way it looked on Caz’s cell.’

‘Caz saw it?’ I gasped.

‘Better, she recorded it. I think she knew I wouldn’t believe it unless she had some proof.’

I shook my head, still flabbergasted, ‘and you and Marc are still friends?’

She smiled sadly, ‘honey, at our school everyone knows everything. That first day back after summer would be the first time everyone saw me and Marc after hearing the rumours. Everything had to look easy breezy, we had to maintain the perfect facade.’

She was clicking her heeled booties against the floor in a jittery fashion. I was just about to ask her if she’d rather we stopped talking about it when I noticed her glancing over her shoulder. As the blood drained from her face I knew something was totally wrong.

‘What is it?’ I murmured, not wanting to turn around myself.

She inhaled deeply, ‘Skye Scottsdale and her nasty clique have just entered.’

I vaguely recognised the name though I had no idea where from. Suddenly a brief memory of homecoming game against Malibu High flashed in my mind. Skye Scottsdale was the beautiful cheer captain, all blonde hair and endless legs.

With a quick glance behind me, I noticed she had her back to me, but one of her friends a rich, chocolate brown skinned girl noticed me staring. She poked Skye in the ribs and muttered something. They both turned around and smirked.

‘That’s her.’ Stacie stammered. At first I thought she was talking about Skye and I was confused. Why would a girl with such confidence like Stacie be intimidated by a fellow blonde? But then I looked again, and her narrowed eyes were focused, not on Skye but the dark skinned beauty next to her.

‘Who is she?’ I queried.

Stacie swallowed, taking a sip of her mineral water before answering.
