CHAPTER 21: GIRLS LIKE ME

The day after homecoming was pretty nondescript. I slept in because I was mildly hung over and spent the morning watch reruns of Gossip Girl. In the back of my mind I knew I had a trig test coming up, not to mention a mountain of English homework but I was too content with having a duvet day to care.

Marc hadn’t texted me since last night, and whilst part of me worried I’d somewhat scared him off, the other, possibly more rational side of my brain just laughed and told me I was being a moron. When did Rebecca Johnson start caring so much about inconsequential boys?

But I pull myself out of bed just before midday and dress in some running clothes. I’ve completely neglected running these past few days and I feel awful about it, so I grab some water from the side board and do a little limbering.

As I begin to run along the sidewalk I can feel my mind clearing, and I begin to review my first week at Miriam High School. I can’t believe it’s only been a week. It seems, far, far longer especially when you take Marc and Stacie and homecoming and all the other crazy things I’ve done into consideration. Things like that don't happen to girls like me.

Suddenly I'm thrown back into a vivid memory, something I’d rather forget but definitely can’t. Its part way through my sophomore year, we’re playing badminton in gym class. Not a good thing for someone with absolutely no hand eye coordination.

‘Right!’ the teacher, Miss Bragg shouted out. She was vile, but then again she taught sport. Clearly an abomination in anyone's books. ‘Badminton today guys! I’m going to pair you up and then we’ll play a doubles tournament.’ She smiles like it’s a good idea. I glower at the floor.

Watching from my spot at the back, I observe as she partners people up and arm them with a birdie and a racket. Try as I may, I just can’t seem to blend my overweight body into the background. I pray by some miracle that she doesn’t notice me, but of course she does and I’m partnered with a tall, athletic girl called Kat.

Great, just damn fabulous.

I notice she doesn’t look too pleased when she realises she’s stuck with me as a partner.

‘Okay um, sorry what's your name again?’ she asks me biting her glossed lip.

Wow, we’ve only been in this class since freshman year... I think moodily.

‘Becky,’ I supply, ‘I should warm you, I'm pretty crap at this.’
