CHAPTER 22: FACE LIKE THUNDER
Driving to school the next morning was both better and worse than it had been one week ago, on my first day. It was better because I knew people, I wasn’t terrified of getting lost on my way to class, and the chance of being shoved in a gym locker to die seemed minimal. However it was worse because I would have to see Stacie and Marc and frankly I wasn’t sure I was mentally ready for that.
After we’d talked for a little longer on the phone, I’d made up some excuse before hanging up on her. I just didn’t want to have to listen to her whine on about how unfair her perfect life was.
But now I regretted that because it was going to be majorly awkward when I next saw her.
Pulling into the parking lot I swung around into my usual spot next to Caz’s Porsche. Scanning the lot I could see Marc and Stacie leaning over a picnic bench together, seemingly deep in conversation. There was a sheet of paper between them that somewhat resembled calculus, but it looked thoroughly forgotten.
I glowered to myself and headed toward Niki and Rochelle, who looked to be having a much more jovial conversation.
‘Aw hey babe,’ Niki smiled and pulled me into a one armed hug. In the other hand she clutched a low calorie cereal bar, that she had part way nibbled through.
‘Hey, how was your weekend?’
‘Oh my gosh so much fun! Homecoming was an absolute blast and then I got to hang out with everyone at the beach yesterday! It really sucked that you couldn’t come though.’ She added as an afterthought.
‘Wait, come where?’ I queried.
‘To the beach, for the little gathering? Ella said she asked you?’
‘Um...’ I shook my head, ‘no she didn’t...’
Niki rolled her eyes, ‘it’s probably because of the whole you and Marc thing.’
‘We literally went to homecoming together, we’re hardly married!’
‘it’s not so much that, more like the fact that the whole school is talking about the fact that you guys slept together at Caz’s.’
What?!
Sorry backtrack...
