CHAPTER 20: LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION!
Pulling into the school parking lot was like entering a movie. Because I’d never been to a homecoming dance before I didn’t really know what to expect, so I’d been basing my mental image on a Hollywood blockbuster. And that did not disappoint. All around were groups of people pooling together, girls in beautiful dresses, guys look dashing in tuxedos. As we slid into a parking space I spotted Stacie looking drop dead gorgeous in a red silk maxi dress.
‘Hey hun!’ she called out, giving me a hand as I pulled myself from the car.
Marc frowned at her, ‘isn’t that my job Stace? You know, helping her out, being a gentleman etcetera?’
Stacie rolled her eyes and grinned at us, ‘we can go inside in about five minutes. They’re just adding the perfect touches to the homecoming court I think.’
‘Ooh who’s on it?’
‘Sabrina got homecoming queen, Matt got king, and for the underclassmen: Niki got princess and this guy called Travis got prince.’
‘Sabrina's captain of the cheer quad right?’
‘Yeah babe that's her.’
‘Hey look people are starting to go in now!’ Marc called out, taking my arm. ‘Look there’s a photographer by the door, doing couple photos.’
I blushed awkwardly; I was torn between wanting a memorabilia for the evening yet knowing that I would look a plain Jane next to Marc. However I don't say anything and soon we’re approaching the man with the camera. Because night has fallen, he has two professional looking studio lights illuminating the pathway to cast some light on the picture.
Marc slips his arm around my waist and I try to put a natural smile on my face. However all I can think about is his intoxicating scent and the fact that his hand is brushing against my waist. Much too soon it’s over and we escape into the hall.
Inside the room has been decorated expertly. It’s all pastels and flowy streamers but somehow it looks beautiful. Upon the stage there is a DJ and the crowns for the homecoming court. I'm told the ceremony will happen soon.
Marc still has his arm around my waist - a fact I'm all too aware of – however he drops it as soon as his friends come over. Part of me feels a little embarrassed, am I still not good enough?
‘Hey guys,’ he shouts over the music, and they all do that typical guy thing where they slap each other’s backs and holler. ‘Do you all know Bex?’ he indicates me, and suddenly five pairs of eyes are grazing over me.
‘Oh hey Bex,’ one tallish boy with silvery blonde hair says, ‘so you're the one he’s been obsessing over?’ there’s an explosion of laughter from the group.
‘Yeah he can’t stop talking about you!’ another boy grins.
‘it’s all: “I wish Bex would call me! Should I call Bex? Is that needy?”’ one of the boys, I recognised to be Matt Bell said in a camp singsong voice.
Naturally I flushed to the roots of my hair. Totally the worst thing that could have happened especially since I'm strawberry blonde. Whilst I didn’t believe it had happened for a second it was still kind of nice.
