'Okay, I'm really starting to worry about this quiz.' I mumbled out loud. I was sat in homeroom, with Caz, surrounded by math textbooks and the notes I'd made with Marc last night.
'I don't know why you're so bothered,' Caz glanced up at me, from her MacBook, 'it's only a pop quiz.'
'Yeah, one that I need to do well on.' I glowered at a particularly nasty problem about half way through my notes. 'I really hope the cosine rule isn't in it, because I just don't get it at all. Gah, why did I have to sleep through that class?'
'Because it's boring as hell?' Caz supplied.
But I wasn't listening; I had begun to scribble down the next line of workings out.
*
Entering trig I was a wreck, I hadn't been this nervous since the first day of school. Seriously, what was wrong with me? I spotted Rochelle, sat by our usual desks and headed over.
'Hey, how are you feeling?' I asked.
'Okay I think, I've been through all those problems he set us on Tuesday and I think I understand how most of it work.'
I just nodded, I was feeling slightly giddy. And not in a good way.
As Mr. Matthews entered armed with the source of my worry I focused on deep breathing and reciting my rules. Silence swept over the class as he checked everyone had the necessary equipment before handing out the test papers.
After being told we could start I flipped mine over expecting the worst. What I got was far from it. The first question was simple enough and casting my brain back to Marc's last night I found I was able to recall how to do it.
Half an hour later I was convinced I had answered most of the questions correctly. My breathing had eased and my heart rate was almost back to normal. In the remaining few minutes I checked a couple of questions through before sitting back in my chair. I noticed then that Mr. Matthews was staring at me in apparent shock. I bet he'd never thought the pretty, dumb, new girl would have finished his quiz.
Well fuck you, Mr. Matthews; don't judge a book by its cover.
After the quiz was over we still had about fifteen minutes of class left, so we were set some problems to complete whilst our tests were marked. I found that now I was giving the work my undivided attention, it seemed a lot less complicated.
'Okay guys, I've got the result of your quizzes!' my heart started beating fast again. 'Mostly good, a couple of rough areas but in general good effort.'
I gulped when I saw his eyes land on me towards the latter of his sentence. He began to hand them back and I almost died of jealousy upon seeing the shiny black A on Rochelle's work.
'Good work Rebecca,' he said as he handed my test to me, 'well tried.'
I could barely look, but when I eventually did, sighed with relief - a B. Brilliant. Well, not exactly brilliant, but it was a good pass and meant I could go to Stacie's party.
After class, I almost sprinted out intending to find Marc to tell him about my grade and in doing so ran, smack bang into him coming out of the class adjacent from me.
'I got my quiz marks!' I tell him.
He grins, 'come on then, how good a tutor was i?'
'Meh, you're alright I suppose... no, I got a B!!' I yelled. And before I knew it he swept me into a tight hug.
'I knew you could do it babe.' He mumbled into my shoulder.
I pulled back, praying he couldn't hear how frantically my heart was beating.
'Thank you so much for helping me with those problems.'
'No worries. But this does have one negative side...'
My heart sank, 'oh yeah? What's that?'
'We'll have to cancel our plans on Friday because I suppose you'll be going to Stacie's now then?'
'Oh god I'd completely forgotten about that!' I paused, 'hang on a minute, did you say that you would have tutored me, even though you could go to Stacie's party?'
He frowned, 'babe, I'm not about to cancel plans just because something comes up.'
'Yeah but tutoring me is hardly fun city is it?'
He laughed, 'well I get to spend time with you don't I?' he winked at me, 'see you around babe.'
And as per usual, I was left catching my breath in the corridor. Thankfully I knew I had PE next, one of my least favourite classes. I think it was more because of the terrible memories I had of past experiences of exercise than the fact I couldn't actually do anything that remotely involved hand eye coordination.
Arriving at the locker room, most of the girls were already inside and changing. To my embarrassment I had to wear the regulation uniform of a tragic grey tee and matching shorts. It looked like an ensemble the old me would have created on a particularly lazy day.
But thankfully everyone was in the same boat. So swinging up my hair into a sporty ponytail and pulling on my Nikes, I headed into the gym with Stacie.
Today, as for the past couple of weeks we were doing badminton. A vile sport which involved smacking the birdie across the net in order to try and get you opponent to miss it. Which in mine and Stacie's case happened more than often.
To our dismay, we were playing against Jasper (who frankly I'd rather never see again,) and Josh, a boy who Caz had slept with. Unfortunately they were indeed very good, and kept smashing the poor birdie at us, seemingly enjoyed out distress.
The game ended 11-3 and our measly three points had been a struggle. Thankfully after that we got to sit out and watch the others play.
'So, my party, can you come?' Stacie asked me, still catching her breath.
'Yes!' I grinned, 'I got a B.'
'Brilliant.' She smiled at me, 'right here's my plan: you and a few of the girls can come get ready around my house beforehand. The party will kick off at about eight so people will start arriving then. I'm going to get our pool bar stocked up and get a proper DJ to sort out the music. Sound good?'
'Sounds amazing.' I said truthfully.
'And then people can either leave or stay over, depending on what time they wish to go home.' Her eyes glinted.
'I can't wait!'
'Oh Bex this is going to be the best party Miriam High has seen in a long time!'
We smirked at each other, before collapsing in fits of giggles. I couldn't wait; partying with the populars was like entering a different universe. It was like a Hollywood party, one for which I was more than ready for.
Author's note: so i know it was kinda a filler chapter but its setting the mood for the future chapters!
