CHAPTER 40: QUESTIONABLE TRUTHS
I arrived home at about five thirty that evening, laden with shopping bags. Stacie had decided that she wanted to shop for longer because she wasn’t (and I quote:) going to let that grotsky little bitch ruin her day. So between H&M and the Forever 21 sale we’d gotten some fairly cute new pieces. But the whole time we’d been out, a burning desire to run home and phone Marc kept rearing its ugly head.
‘Mom, Dad I'm home!’ I called out, slamming the porch door.
Kicking off my sandals I headed upstairs, my heart thrumming nervously. I’d spent the whole day panicking about phoning Marc, it had never actually occurred to me, what he’d say when I did. Maybe he wasn’t the perfect guy I’d thought he was.
Taking out my phone I browsed through my Tumblr notifications before biting the bullet.
Stomach swimming, I hit dial.
He picked up on the second ring. ‘Hey babe.’
He sounded so casual and normal that my chest stuttered a little.
‘Bex?’ he inquired, and I realised I hadn’t actually answered.
‘Hey Marc,’ I murmured trying to find the words.
‘What’s wrong?’ clearly something in my voice had given it away.
‘Um I really need to talk to you about something.’
Now was not the time to go all shy Becky on him!
‘Okay...’ I could almost hear him frown.
‘It’s quite delicate... it’s about Stacie.’ I clarified.
After a small pause in which I heard him sigh, he replied, ‘go on?’
Okay here goes nothing: ‘I know you cheated on her.’
The silence was audible, ‘oh.’ His voice sounded strained, ‘look Bex maybe now isn’t the time, I’ll come and pick you up and we can talk about this.’
‘Okay.’ My voice was quiet, I hated upsetting people and from Marc’s cool tone I’d done exactly that.
There was a pause, ‘I’ll be over in twenty.’
And with that he hung up on me.
With a slight panic I opened my shopping bags to find something to wear. Just because I wasn’t going on a date with him didn’t mean I was allowed to look like trash.
