CHAPTER 23: COFFEE DATE

When Marc had specified he would take me for a coffee I’d immediately presumed that meant Starbucks and frankly my mouth was watering at the thought of a pumpkin spice latte. However he ended up taking me the suburbs of town, to this tiny, chintzy coffee house. It was tiny inside with only about eight tables and enough room for a counter full of some of the most delicious looking cakes I’d ever seen.

Needless to say pumpkin spice wasn’t an option so I settled on a hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream. When Marc had specified he was paying I’d decided to go all out with my order, even adding an extra dash of chocolate powder for an extra fifty cents.

Marc had clearly been here before as he chatted amicably with the girl behind the counter. She seemed a little dazed by his good looks and frankly I couldn’t blame her. It was an off day when I didn’t swoon at some point in his presence.

‘Here you go guys,’ the server, Kaylee had arrived with our drinks, ‘enjoy! Give me a shout if you need anything.’ She spoke mostly to Marc with a faintly wistful look on her face.

But Marc, who was watching me, somewhat intently, just gave her a polite smile and nodded.

‘thanks,’ I said, glancing in her direction.

Slightly disappointed she left us alone.

‘Sooo.’ Marc dragged out the syllable, a faint grin on his face.

‘So what?’ I replied, fishing a marshmallow from my drink.

‘you still haven’t told me why you’re mad?’

‘I’m not mad Marc.’ I sighed, exasperated.

‘then what is it babe, you’re driving me insane!’

A little flush had built in my cheeks. In the plain light of day I realised it was probably pathetic and who was I to judge someone’s exes? Stacie was gorgeous, was it any wonder her and the human sex god had been a couple?

‘honestly its stupid, I'm over it.’ I told him, not meeting his worried look.

‘well then tell me what was bothering you, was it something I said?’

‘no,’ I paused, inhaling slowly, ‘more like someone you dated.’

I watched as his expression changed from confused to comprehensive to understanding.
