CHAPTER 34: I'M RUNNING
I'm not sure how much time passes before my brain finally reaches a level of understandable coherency. Eventually I manage to pull myself out of Marc’s arms and frantically begin paddling to the edge of the pool. With one final heave I’m out, bedraggled hair and all. People are staring at us, some in awe, and some in confusion. But there’s one face that stands out from the crowd.
Stacie looks pale white under the glaring spotlight. Her lips are slightly parted as if to say: I have no idea what the actual hell is going on here. Suddenly I feel so bad.
So I do what any sane person would do, I run.
At first I just want to get away from everyone’s stares, I’d never been one for attention. But as soon as I'm in the house I keep running, my legs pounding up the stairs.
Inside Stacie’s room I slam the door shut and lean back against it with a sigh. It’s okay, I'm safe. I continue deep breathing until I catch sight of myself in the wall mirror.
I was right, I looked absolutely terrible. My hair was loose and sticking to my back, my eyes looked wide and terrified, my jean shorts dripping on the floor. With a final deep breath I run to Stacie’s closet and pick out a bikini – I doubt she’d mind. Locking myself in the bathroom I change and tie my hair in a messy bun and upon inspecting my makeup realised that fortunately it had survived.
Unlocking the door I was in for a shock. Standing by the window with a hand on her narrow hip was Stacie. Oh god.
‘Stace, I’m sorry.’ I mumbled, feeling the blush rise to my cheek.
‘yeah, you frickin’ should be!’ she had one eyebrow raised but didn’t look angry, much to my surprise.
‘I didn’t mean for that to happen, it just sort of... did.’ I finished.
‘What are you talking about? Look all I'm saying is I can’t believe you didn’t tell me? Best friends tell each other stuff!’
‘Wait, you’re not angry?’
She narrowed her eyes, ‘angry? Why?’
Are we even having this conversation?! ‘I just kissed your ex boyfriend.’ Saying it like that made it one hundred times worse.
But she shook it off, ‘oh please, I'm so over him. I’m just happy for you! God Bex fancy you getting all worried about how I’d react!’ she giggled, ‘is that why you’re hiding up here?’
‘Partly.’ I said meekly. Totally did not want to disclose the other reasons.
She had just opened her mouth to reply when the door to her room creaked open. We both wheeled around to see Marc’s head poking through the gap. He still looks dripping wet and totally dishevelled but somehow this only makes him more drool-worthy.
