CHAPTER 14: AT LEAST YOU'RE TRYING...

The next morning I call Stacie as I’m running a brush through my hair. Its cheer tryouts tonight, for the absent position of flyer.

To put it another way, tonight is the impending doom that will probably result in my social status falling into the depths of oblivion.

I click through the contacts before I find Stacie’s number. Pressing speaker phone, I rest the phone on my vanity.

‘Hey babe,’ Stacie picks up on the second ring.

‘Hey,’ I tell her back, ‘I need some advice.’

‘Sure hon, what about? Is it boys, because girl you have come to the right place!’

I roll my eyes, last night Niki had texted me to say that apparently Stacie had had Jeremy Stevens over to her house, and they weren’t exactly doing math homework.

‘No it’s not about boys. Actually I’m slightly nervous for cheer tryouts?’ I say it like a question, ‘I've never cheered before.’

‘Okay, be confidence, because being a cheerleader is all about looking good and being preppy and occasionally doing a couple of dance moves. Make sure you turn up to practise looking sporty but cute, makeup is a must. Hair in a high ponytail and some red lipstick. You’ve got to look the part so don't be afraid to go a little OTT.’

‘Okay but what about the actual cheer part?’

‘Well you and the other girl will swap in and learn some of our basic dances. I mean the homecoming game is Friday so basically whoever picks it up quickest and looks the cutest will easily get in.’

‘Thanks Stace, I owe you.’ I tell her.

‘No probs sweetie, hey I was meaning to ask are you coming to Caz’s party after the homecoming dance?’

‘I didn’t know there was one, but sure I’ll be there.’

‘Fabulous, she usually hires taxies to take us back to her place.’

‘Okay, sure.’

‘Great, see you in a bit babe, love you.’

And with that she ends the call without waiting for me to reply.

As with usual, Stacie has left me feeling slightly breathless. She moves so quickly, sweeping through life like a tornado, cutting anything down in her path.

Frowning slightly I grab some sunglasses and my sports bag. Last night I’d gathered some black running leggings, my Nikes and a neon pink sports bra and chucked them in a bag. Hoping this would be an okay look for cheer tryouts I took Stacie’s advice and wrapped a hair elastic around my wrist and chucked a red lipstick in my purse.

Shouting out a hurried goodbye to my mom, I slipped into the fiat and pulled out of the driveway. I felt much more comfortable driving to school today than I had on the first day. I knew what to expect now. The stares were becoming slightly less noticeable but I’d realised that they were bound to follow me. Because in the past I’d been the one staring at the popular, pretty girls as they walked past.

Pulling up to the parking lot, I slid into the space where Marc’s car rested. Most of the crew were milling around, copying each other’s homework or chatting. As I climbed out of the car I spotted Stacie talking to a dark haired girl I’d never seen before. I was just about to make my way over to them when I was cornered by marc.
