CHAPTER 17: HOMECOMING SPIRIT

When my alarm clock began blaring out the radio at some ungodly hour I was, at first a little confused as to why there was a deep, sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Then last night’s events came slowly back into play. Marc at my house... conversing with my mother... giving me his sweater...

Holy mother of Jesus it was the homecoming game today!

I sat up so abruptly my head started swimming and I had an urge to fall over sideways. But I refrained from this and when I was sure I was awake, I climbed out of bed, cringing at the tangled mess of hair.

After showering, I dressed and applied some makeup. It was strange how some things just became part of your ritual so easily. Six months ago I would have not been caught dead wearing makeup. I mean, makeup was a gateway to fake right?

‘Mom!’ I yelled downstairs. As it was a Friday I knew she would be up and awake already, getting ready for work.

‘What?’ she yelled back. For a second I felt bad for my dad who was probably still sleeping.

Oh well such is life.

‘I've got the homecoming game tonight and then there’s this, like small after party thing. All my friends are going, and its a Friday night...’ I said this a little quieter as I emerged out of my room and jogged the stairs.

When my mother came into view she frowned a little. ‘Where is this party being held?’

‘Um at this girl Caz’s house.’

‘And will there be alcohol.’

Duh. ‘No.’

‘And boys?’

‘Well they won’t be staying over night...’ lies.

She contemplates it for a second. ‘Well I suppose so. But you will be back on Saturday before the homecoming dance right?’

‘Sure.’

‘Because I want to see my little baby all dressed up!’

‘Mom!’ I'm so embarrassed, if anyone else had heard that right now... ‘I'm not five!’

‘I know, I know.’ She smiles sheepishly, ‘well good luck today anyway.’
