Chapter 26

I grabbed an early dinner and was now waiting nervously in the gathering hall.

All the keepers were slowly filtering In, making small talk with each other. Many kept giving me glances, some full of surprise, others suspicion. The worst were the ones with lust.

Finally, Nick walks in, followed by Alby and - wait, Newt?!

"Alright! Everyone take a seat and quiet down! It's time to talk about our latest Issue, y/n's job assignment or assignments." Nick says.

I look over at Newt and give him a look asking: "What are you doing here?" Newt only shrugged In response.

"Hold up, She hasn't even tried out all the jobs!" Gally protests.

"I have, just none of you were there." I say, shrugging my shoulders.

"Well I think she should be a med-jack. She seems to do that well!" Fry says, making me blush.

"I agree! Took charge when Newt's leg broke and was a great help around the medhut when me or Jeff weren't available." Clint jumps in.

Nick nods his head. "Alright. Any other pulls?" He asks.

Minho stands up and looks over at me. "Ya. I want this shank to be a runner." The keepers went into uproar at the suggestion.

My mouth dropped.

What?! Minho wanted me for a runner? A smile was beginning to spread onto my lips when another image of a girl being killed by a griever filled my head. And a thought of WICKED capturing me. My smile fell along with my heart.

"Look, She survives a night in the maze! If she can do that, she might be able to help us find a way out!" Minho says.

Everyone begins talking and I look over at Newt who gives me a reassuring smile. "Alright. So we got runner and med-jack. What do you think Newt? She worked with you the most while she was a med-jack." Nick says.

Newt slowly gets up and says: "Y/n did a bloody brilliant job! But If running makes her happy, she should do it. I think it's best if she does what she loves." Nick nods his head and then Newt sits down.
