Mirae's POV
I was about to touch the door but flinched on hearing San's voice. "What are you doing there?"
"A-Ah... I..." I backed up. "I came here to get Byeol's ball." I showed him the ball of wool.
"Then get back to Byeol... And don't go near that room again."
"Uh..."
I quickly ran to the living room and gave the ball to Byeol who started to play with it happily.
What's in that room that he's so protective about?...
"What do you want for dinner?" San said.
"Huh?" I snapped out of my thoughts.
"I'll order some delivery food. What do you want to eat?"
"Ah, anything is okay for me."
"Pizza and rabokki (ramyeon + tteokbokki)?"
I nodded. "Sounds good."
I went back to play with Byeol. San then came back with a bowl of cat food for her.
"Byeol, come and eat," San said, keeping the bowl on the floor. Byeol jumped on it and started eating.
"She's eating well." I stared at her with a smile.
San too sat down beside me. "You're right."
"San, can I ask you something?"
He nodded. "Go ahead."
"Why did you want to become an idol?"
"Why are you asking that suddenly?"
"Just answer it already."
"Just because... It was my dream. When I was young, I used to go to concerts with my mom. I was fascinated by it. So at that time, I thought I want to become an idol."
"Ah, I see..."
"What about you? Don't you have any dream?"
"Me? I had one..." I weakly smiled. "But I gave it up."
"Why?"
—Flashback—
"Ah, wae?~ Why can't you come? It's my final match, you know." I was talking with him on the phone.
"I know but I can't leave my job today."
"Dad..."
"I'll be cheering for you from here. Sorry, I can't make it today."
I pouted. "Okay... I'll try my best to bring that gold medal and make you proud."
"You've already made me proud. I know you'll win this time too. I believe in you. Mirae hwaiting!"
I chuckled. "Hwaiting for you too!" I ended the call.
I was a little upset that he couldn't make it to my final match of taekwondo but I had to do my best to make him proud.
But little did I know that it was the last call I had with my dad.

"Why isn't Dad picking up his call?"
I was now walking back home. The match was already over and guess what, I won the gold medal.
"Dad will be so happy to see it?" I smiled, looking at the medal in my hand.
Just then I got a call from an unknown number. I still picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Are you Kang Minhyuk's daughter?"
"Yes, you're right but..."
"Your dad..."
I wasn't able to believe what I just heard next. Without wasting any more time, I rushed to the place.

I went to the hospital and searched for his room. Hundreds of things were running on my mind then, mostly the bad thoughts. But I didn't want to believe any of them. I just prayed that he would be okay.
I reached his room and saw him unconscious on the bed. Some doctors were also there who were checking up on him. Tears kept streaming down my eyes on seeing him like that.
So the thing was that the place, where my dad went to work, was having a party organised by some CEO of a big company. Unfortunately, there was some kind of accident and he got injured there.
"Is my dad okay now? Can I see him?" I quickly asked the doctor who just came out of the room.
"I'm sorry to say..." He hesitated a little. "We couldn't save him."
"What?..."
My heart broke into a million pieces on hearing that. The medal which I was holding slipped down from my hands.
"He was in a very critical condition when he was brought here. I'm sorry." By saying that, he left.
My legs went weak and I fell on the floor. I just wasn't able to think straight at that time.
I wished it to be a dream and wanted to wake up as soon as possible. But it wasn't.
—End of flashback—
"From then I gave up on my dream of becoming a professional taekwondo fighter." I looked down as tears kept rolling down my cheeks.
"It must have been so hard for you," San said and gently made me lean on him. He patted my back as I kept sobbing on his shoulder.
To be continued...
