Haley's POV
So, today was the day. The day I'd finally be leaving the comforting atmosphere of my own home, my bedroom, even my kitchen. I knew I'd miss it. There were just so many memories withheld in this house. I looked down at the box I held in my hand, labeled "My Pictures". I smiled to myself, thinking back to all the times that were contained in this little cardboard box. There were pictures of my childhood, pictures of my brother and I, pictures of my dad. Everything I love and cherish can be seen through these pictures.
I almost dropped the box as I heard the floorboards creak from my mom stepping into my room. "Everything's almost packed."
My head bobbed in a nod as I sent her a comforting smile to reassure her that this was what I wanted. I wanted to start anew in a different city with different people so I could really reinvent myself. I would be able to leave behind all the bad times I went through in this small Pennsylvania town. That's what I wanted. New. Fresh.
I held the box in my hand as I looked at my empty room for the last time, I wouldn't be seeing it for awhile. My legs began moving to follow my mom downstairs. I was ready for this, I knew I was, but I couldn't help that feeling that plagued me in the pit of my stomach. Is this the right choice?
The question was pushed to the back of my mind to the best of my ability. I stepped out onto the porch, down the steps, and toward my packed car and huge moving truck.
Charlie had already gone to New York to move into his dorm. The coach of the hockey team had already started putting them to work so he knew he had his work cut out for him. I didn't want to trouble him with saying he should come back to help me. Even though he offered, we settled on him just helping me move all my things in once I got there.
I set the box I was carrying in the back seat of my car before turning towards my brother and mom. I hugged Tom first as his arms wrapped around me. Somehow, I felt as if our relationship had grown since he came home. I liked that feeling of knowing my brother would be there for me if I ever needed it.
Then it was onto my mom, who was already wiping away the wet tears that had sprung from her eyes. I wanted to cry too just looking at her. "Mom, don't cry. I'll be okay. I promise." I told her, kissing her cheek before pulling away slightly.
"Are you sure you don't want me to ride up there with you?" She asked, pulling herself together like the strong woman I knew she was.
"Yeah, I'm sure, mom. I want to do this for myself and get the full experience. You can trust me." I reassured her for the second time today.
"Okay, I believe you and I trust you. Call as soon as you get there or if there's any trouble, ok?" She held onto my shoulders as I nodded and agreed to her terms. "Okay, I love you, Haley. Be careful." She said, kissing my forehead before I climbed into the driver's seat of my car.
I looked back to the driver of the moving truck as he nodded to allow me to back out of my driveway. Once I did, I looked out my window, waving one last time to my brother and mom. I took in a deep breath before shifting into drive and beginning down the road to my new life. It was finally my time. And I was going to make the most of it.
