Charlie's POV
Wes. I couldn't believe it. As I shook my head and blinked a couple times, the name was still clear on the tiny screen. I hoped it wouldn't be, but it was. I hoped my mind was just playing tricks on me but unfortunately, this is reality.
Why the fuck would Wes be texting Haley? Why the fuck would Haley be texting Wes?
Nothing seemed to connect. Haley hates Wes. I know she does. Anyone with eyes could see that from what she said to him at the party. So why would they still be in contact?
My thumb hovered over the "view" option on the screen on Haley's phone. I slowly pressed my finger down as the message was shown now for my eyes to look upon.
From Wes:
C'mon Hales. Come over tonight. Charlie won't mind.
My stomach twisted and jerked as I read each word. I instantly felt nauseous as my arm wrapped around my torso. Why? That was the only question that came to my head. How long has this little "relationship" been going on? Has she been lying to me this entire time? Have her and Wes been planning this whole thing just to stab me in the back in the end? I didn't understand it. All the pieces seemed to be broken up and it was my job to piece them together again. Because frankly, I didn't know what to believe.
Haley's POV
"Mom?" I called as I heard the front door open.
"Yes, Hales?" She answered as I let out a relieved sigh. My mind is playing tricks on me, my head is still spinning, and my nerves have yet to calm down.
"Nothing. I was just making sure it was you." I told her as I heard her shuffling around with the sounds of grocery bags in her hands. I assumed that's where she was.
I sat on the top stair as I leaned my head against the railing. My finger tracing over the etched woodwork of the frame. I wrapped my sweater closer around my body with my one arm as my touch continued its dance along the railing.
"Haley! Jo's on the phone!'' My mothers voice was heard again as I furrowed my eyebrows slightly.
"Ok. I'll get the one up here." I replied, wobbly standing from my space to grab one of our home phones.
I picked it up and said, "Hello?"
"Hey! It's Jo. I can't believe I still have your home phone number." Jo chuckled on the other end.
Why hadn't she just called my cell phone? It most likely would've saved her the hassle of trying to dig up this number.
"Yeah, wow." My voice sounded drained, weak, and frankly unamused.
"Hey, you okay? You sound kind of depressed."
"Yeah, I'm fine." I lied.
"You sure?" She pressed on which honestly wasn't helping.
"I said I'm fine." I snapped a little harsher than I intended. "Sorry, sorry. I just...um...feeling kind of under the weather." I continued to lie. She didn't need to know about this whole Charlie thing.
"Okay, well I was just going to call and ask if you maybe wanted to spend the night at my place? Charlie could even come but not stay over." Her voice sounded almost taunting in a way but I figured it was just more tricks from my devilish mind.
"No, um...he's busy tonight." I bit my bottom lip, silently praying she'd believe yet another lie that I fed to her.
"Oh, okay. Well what about you?"
"That sounds great actually. I'll come over around 6?"
"Just like old times." She muttered as I laughed lightly and smiled.
