Haley's POV

I stared at the ground, stunned at what Wes just said.

I just hope Charlie is safe and Wes doesn't pull something stupid.

Just as I was thinking these thoughts, Charlie burst through the door.

I stood up from the couch and walked to the main hallway.

I tried to speak but Charlie, almost forcefully, pushed his lips to mine, cupping my cheek.

"Sorry, I had to do that." He shrugged, backing away to create more distance between us. I nodded. "And I'm sorry about leaving like that. Wes said I had to get to the rink for an emergency meeting."

"Wait, Wes?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Wes came here though."

Charlie cut me off. "What the hell! Why would he come here?"

I bit my lip.

"Haley, you need to tell me."

I sighed taking a seat on the couch, rubbing my hands over my forehead.

"He doesn't like us being together."

He moved closer to me. "Why would he care if we're together?"

I looked down and squeezed my eyes shut to prevent a tear from falling.

"Sophomore year. That's why." I said, abruptly standing up and leaving the room.

I charged up the stairs, into my bedroom. I didn't want Charlie to see me this way, so vulnerable, so weak. I sat on the edge of my bed for a second before going across the hall into my bathroom. The drawer squeaked as I slid it open, the object I thought could help me forget sat in there.

"Haley, c'mon open up." Charlie's voice made me stop.

"I was stupid, naïve, young. I still hate myself for it."

"I'll kill him for hurting you." He spoke sternly and slowly through the door.

"Let it go, Charlie. It was my mistake."

"No, Haley. I can't let this go."

I opened the door only to see the back of Charlie going down the stairs.

"Where are you going?" I asked from behind him.

He turned to me for a split second, "He needs to be set straight. I'm going to go somewhere. You stay here, lock the doors, and stay inside until I get back. Understand?"

"You can't just use violence to erase the past."

"Watch me."

Charlie's POV

I brutally slammed my door to my car shut and turned the engine on.

How could Wes do this? Go behind my back with Haley after all the stuff he's already done to her. Have the nerve to tell her he doesn't like us being together. Well he better watch out because he's got another thing coming.

**********

I stopped at Matt's house. Loud music was blaring as many cars were parked outside.

I knew Wes would be here.

Shoving past all the drunk teenagers, I found Wes sitting on a chair with a girl on his lap. Adrianna.

Great. Just what I need.
