It's been a long time

Chapter 25

A few days into Merediths week at home, Derek was very supportive. He made sure she always had her pain meds, and made sure she didn't get up when she didn't have to.

"Der?" Meredith asked from the couch. Derek quickly walked into the living room and walked to her. "You okay?" Derek asked worriedly as he sat down next to her and grabbed her hand. "Yeah, I was just thinking..." Meredith trailed off. "About what?" Derek asked softly.

"Do you think it's time we...buy a house? Addison and Mark are so I just thought." Meredith said shyly. Dereks face lit up. "I think that's a great idea." He said with a big smile. "Really?" Meredith asked. Derek nodded and grabbed his laptop off of the coffee table.

He went on to a real estate website and turned to Mer. "So what kind of house are we thinking?" Derek asked. "Something big enough for us and kids." Meredith said with a soft smile. Dereks heart warmed at the thought of kids with her. "So maybe... 3, 4, 5 bedrooms?" He asked. "5. Just in case." Meredith as her cheeks flushed a shade of pink.

"Dream house?" He asked. "We could make our dream house. But remember we're just now starting out 2nd year of internship, and we don't have that much money." Meredith pointed out. "Maybe just a normal sized house for now, and we're attendings we can move into our dream house?" Derek asked. "Sounds good to me." Meredith said happily.

As they were filtering different things that they wanted for the house, Derek couldn't help but smile. He was so happy, and he was settling down with the love of his life. He knew the next step of their relationship was kids, and he also knew that Meredith wanted them but was scared she would be a bad mother. From being a shy kid with no father and an absent mother, Meredith was now a grown woman and on her way to become an excellent surgeon, and Derek was proud of her.

"What about this one?" Derek asked as he clicked on it. Basement, upstairs and downstairs floor, close to the hospital and a 2 car garage. "That looks good." Meredith said as she read the features. "It's in our price range too." Derek pointed out. "What do you think?" Meredith asked with an apprehensive expression. "I think this may be the one." Derek said with a smile. "I think so too." SHe whispered.

Derek clicked a few buttons and Meredith and Derek had officially purchased their first house together. "We just bought a house." Meredith said as she looked at her husband. "We just bought a house." He said as he pressed his lips softly against hers and hugged her. "When can we move in?" Meredith asked. "By next month." He said with a huge smile.

"We should tell mom." Meredith said. Derek nodded and FaceTimed Carolyn. "Hi dearies! How are you feeling Mer?" Carolyn asked with a worried smile. They had told her about the incident and Carolyn was very worried. "I'm good mom. Derek and I actually have something to tell you." Meredith said as she looked at Derek. "We bought a house." Derek said with a smile.

Carolyns gave lit up. Her babies really were growing up. "That's amazing! Where is it?" She asked. "I just sent you a link to the website. You can look at it from there." Derek said As they watched his mom look at the house. "It's gorgeous!" Carolyn exclaimed.

After Carolyn finished looking at it, she said goodbye and left mereditj and Derek alone. "How's your back feeling?" Derek asked. "Good. It's a little sore, but good." She said. "That's good. Want to take a bath?" Derek asked. "Are you telling me I smell?" She asked with a smirk. "No. Just an excuse to take care of you." Derek said with a charming smile. "Maybe just for that I will. Let's go." Meredith said as she allowed Derek to help her up.

They got into the bathroom and Derek started the bath water. He gently helped her take off her clothes and get naked. When she was fully naked, he stripped his clothes and helped her gently get into the water, Derek right behind her.

She sighed as her body submerged into the hot water, feeling dereks body up against hers. "I love you." She said. "I love you too." Derek said as he wrapped his arms around her midsection. She leaned back and enjoyed being in his arms.

They got out of the tub and Derek helped Meredith change. "You lay down and I'll bring up some dinner soon." Derek instructed gently. Meredith nodded and climbed into her bed. She texted Addison and told her about the house. "Omg!! So happy for you guys. Mark and I will help you move in. Congrats!!" Addison sent back. Meredith smiled and picked up her book.

Derek came up 20 minutes later and placed a bowl of pasta in her lap. He climbed in beside her and kissed the side of her head. "Thank you." Meredith said as she dug in. Derek watched amused as Meredith shoved the pasta into her mouth. "House hunting is hard work, huh?" He asked with a smirk. "Shut up." She said with a sarcastic scoff.

After Meredith wolfed down her dinner, she felt herself getting tired. Derek gently took her bowl and placed it on the side table as he noticed her eyes  drooping. Derek placed his bowl on the side table as well and turned the lights off. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her neck before drifting off to sleep, feeling like the happiest man in the world.
