38 weeks came quickly, and now it was just a waiting game for the two expecting parents.
All morning, Meredith had been feeling the all too familiar twinge in her abdomen. But over the past hour or two, they've increased in pain and frequency.
"Hey Derek?" Meredith asked casually as they sat on the couch. "Yeah?" He replied. "I'm pretty sure in labor." She said.
Derek whipped his head toward her and his eyes bulged out of his head. "You're what?" He asked in shock. "I think I'm in labor." She repeated.
"Shit. Shit. Shit. We....you have to go to the hospital." He said, jumping off of the couch. "Ah!" Meredith yelled as she dropped to one knee. "Mer? Mer, what is it?" Derek asked as he rushed over to her.
"This...I don't know. Not contractions." Meredith replied in a strained voice as she breathed heavily. "Okay. Okay. We're gonna go to the hospital." Derek gulped as he looked at his wife.
Meredith put her hand on her lower stomach and pulled away, feeling a sticky substance. "Derek..." Meredith trailed off as she held up her hand.
"Oh my god." Derek breathed. "Derek." Meredith said, getting weaker by the second. "It's okay. It's okay. I'll...I'm gonna call an ambulance. You'll be okay." He said frantically as he dialed 911.
"Okay, they're coming, Mer, okay? Just hold on." Derek said as he looked at his wife, who was laying down, eyes barely opened. He looked at her belly, which was bleeding at a very fast pace.
"Derek..." Meredith whispered, on the verge of losing consciousness. "I know, I know. They're here, I can hear them. Just hang on, okay? Our baby boy is coming today." Derek said, looking at her and the pool of blood surrounded her.
The paramedics came in quickly. "Looks like a placental abruption. How many weeks is she?" One of the paramedics asked. "Uh, 38 weeks." Derek replied, running a stressed hand through his hair.
"Okay. Let's go." He replied. They transferred Meredith on to a gurney and got her quickly into the ambulance. "Dr Grey? Dr Grey, stay awake for us." The paramedic said as they drove to the hospital.
"Baby..." Meredith murmured. "The baby's gonna be just fine, Mer. And so will you." Derek said, holding her hand.
They got to the hospital and Meredith met with Connie and bailey at the trauma bay. "Possible placental abruption, patient lost a lot of blood."
"Definite placental abruption. We need to get her into surgery right now!" Connie yelled. Everyone jumped in action and before Derek knew it, his wife was in emergency surgery and he was in the waiting room.
Derek grabbed his phone shakily and called his mom. "Derek?" Carolyn asked as she answered the phone. "Mom." He whispered, his voice breaking.
"What's wrong?" Carolyn asked in concern. "Mers in surgery." Derek said. "Why? Is she okay? What about the baby?" His mother asked nervously.
"She had a placental abruption. I don't know what's going on. They're going to deliver the baby now." He replied. "Oh god...your father and I will be there soon, Derek. Meredith will and your son Be okay." Carolyn said.
"I can't lose them." Derek cried softly. "You won't. They will be okay. Just try to relax." Carolyn said as she got into the car.

Seconds turned into minutes, and minutes turned into hours. The waiting was awful for Derek. Not knowing the fate of his own wife and baby was killing him slowly.
His parents had arrived shortly after, and mark and Addison were all waiting with him. "It shouldn't be taking this long!" Derek exclaimed as he stood up and began pacing.
"It means they're doing a thorough job, Derek. I'm sure she'll be out soon." Addison said.
As if on cue, Bailey and Connie came out. All the shepherds and everyone stood up in anticipation.
"Meredith is okay. She lost a lot of blood, but she's getting transfusions right now and she's stitched up. The baby is also just fine. He's in the nicu, he was just a little small and we wanted him checked out." Connie said.
Derek breathed a sigh of relief. "I fixed the bleeding in Merediths stomach, so shel need to take it easy for a little while." Bailey said. "Thank you." He said gratefully hugging both women.
"Meredith is in room 1003. I'll bring the baby up in a few minutes." Connie said with a warm smile. Derek quickly followed baileys up to Merediths room.
Derek smiled slightly at his wife, who seemed to be barely awake. "Hi." She whispered. "Hey. You have us quite a scare." Derek replied as he walked over and kissed her forehead.
"Sorry." She said, wincing as she tried to sit up straighter. "Don't be." He replied, moving the bed up for her. "Where's our son?" Meredith asked weakly. Her incision hurt, and she was exhausted, but all she wanted was her baby.
"Right here." Connie said, holding the tiny bundle in her arms as she walked over. "Here you go, mom. He's perfectly healthy." She said, putting the baby onto Merediths chest.
"Oh." Meredith breathed, looking at her baby boy in complete awe. "Hi buddy." Derek whispered, holding out his finger. The tiny baby grabbed his fathers finger and held on.
"Our baby." Meredith said as she rubbed the baby's arm gently. "We need a name for our little boy." Derek said, in happiness that he was a father.
"What do you think about Bailey?" Meredith asked, looking up to her husband. "Bailey? I love it." Derek replied softly as he kissed Her softly. "Bailey Christopher Shepherd." Meredith said
"Do you want to hold him?" Meredith asked. Derek nodded eagerly and carefully took his son into his arms. "Hi Bailey. I'm your daddy." Derek whispered, looking into his sons blue eyes and blonde hair. He was a perfect mix between both of his parents.
"He's beautiful." Meredith said as a tear slipped down her face. "He is. I love you so much. Both of you." Derek said warmly.
"We love you too, Derek." Meredith replied, watching her two boys.
