**Nora POV

Ian's birthday was coming up, he'd be 17 in a few days and we never missed doing birthday stuff together with his mom and my dad.

Though, things would be different this year for obvious reasons.

But we now had more people to help celebrate, as it was normally just the four of us.

I told Lydia and Kit, who actually seemed excited for a birthday celebration, and were all in for celebrating with us.

Caleb didn't care, but said if there was a need for food, he could hook us up.

Huh, cool??

And he said could he invite Court and Benny to come.

I didn't see why not...

"So, you want to throw a party for Ian...in the house?" Opehlia asked, confused as she ate her breakfast with Jo.

I nodded, "Yeah, is that okay? It'll just be a few of us.

Ophelia looked at her wife and Jo just kind of laughed.

"You don't have to ask, as long as we get to wish him a happy birthday as well." Jo told me and I smiled in response.

I nodded, "Duh."

"When is this?" Ophelia asked, putting her coffee mug in the sink.

"Saturday."

"You do know that's three days from now, right?" Ophelia demanded, sounding more annoyed with the date.

I nodded again, "Yeah, I know. I already have everything else planned. I just needed permission."

Ophelia rolled her eyes, "You really planned this out?"

"To the dot." I assured her.

She sighed, "Next time, give us more notice than three days."

I laughed, getting my backpack and going out the door shouting, "I'll try!"

**Ian POV

I knew Nora was planning something, she always does when it's my birthday.

Though, I wasn't sure if I wanted something this year because of my mom not being here.

It was always just the two of us.

I mean, my dad was there up until I was 12 and then he left when he couldn't handle having a gay son.

Honestly, it's been five years, but it still hurts.

That wasn't something I could get over.

I sat at my desk in history, thinking of things like this when Nora came in, smiling at me.

Oh no.

"Why are you smiling? You don't smile." I asked, worried.

She seemed insulted, "I do too."

"Okay, rephrase, not a lot before you got hit by that monster last week. Better?" I replied, which I don't think helped her feelings.

Nora glared at me, "Ian! Why are you being mean to me? I could just not celebrate your birthday like a bad friend."

"Do I even want to this year? Mom isn't here, your dad isn't..."

"Stop right there." She interrupted me, sitting in the desk in front of me and looked me dead in the eyes.

I just blinked and waited for her to say something to me.

She sighed, "Look, I know they're not here and I don't think they would want us to stop living our lives because of that."
